Those of you who are using a #Linux phone to mess around with, what are you using and why? I know that the OnePlus 6T probably gets the best performance, alongside maybe the Pixel 3a, but the idea of buying a years-old phone is just bizarre to me. And I have no idea where Pinephone Pro development is at in 2025.

I understand that these devices aren't quite "daily driver" ready, but with the #AOSP inching towards a cliff, one can't help but keep an eye on the alternatives.

@zak I'm most likely not enlightened enough ... but which cliff are you talking about in regards to AOSP?
Rumour: Google intends to discontinue the Android Open Source Project – OSnews

@zak Thx ... and YIKES!

I do wonder how @e_mydata, @calyxos and @GrapheneOS will tackle this going forward. And to some degree @jolla, which has an Android support layer.

Many people feared what would happen as more needed functionality was moved in the closed source Google service layers. But so far @microg has done a good job covering that.

I've used /e/ OS several years now, and I'm really happy about that as an Android variant. That ships with microG pre-installed, so almost all apps I need works reasonably well.

@dazo I don't think anyone really knows yet. Every custom ROM is potentially impacted. I guess we'll see. But if Google is willing to make this move quietly on a random Wednesday, who knows what else they'll do in the near future.

@zak I keep messing with Droidian on my ThinkPhone but they need to fix video stuff GPS acquisition is also realllllllly slow, but that's common among non-android distros on these because of some Google bit.
https://droidian.org/

You can daily it, and they do list the caveats pretty clearly on the site.

I use the ThinkPhone cuz I like my Lenovo gear. Even though this thing is supposed to get lots of Android version upgrades, it's still at Android 14. Default Android on here also has an amazing desktop mode (like Dex but better) which I really like and use a lot when I am on Android side. Not that I'm dual booting it, if that's a thing, I just haven't fully committed to the Droidian side yet.

Droidian is a GNU/Linux distribution based on Debian for mobile devices. The goal of Droidian is to be able to run Debian on Android phones.

This is accomplished by using well-known technologies such as libhybris and Halium.

Note that this is a downstream Debian derivative, please report bugs and support requests to us, see below for contact details.

@Kancept I had no idea that the ThinkPhone was a platform for mobile Linux. Cool!
@zak and it's Cheap!!! I got it for like $300 when it was released and on sale. It can be had for even less now.
@zak oh, and if you do stick to the AOSP side, Lineage is available for it as well.
@Kancept Unfortunately Lineage is impacted by the same issues that will impact GrapheneOS if Google continues to close off AOSP. So I don't really consider it to be a long-term solution.
@zak agreed. Android's dependency on Google always had an expiration date. It's one of the many reasons I looked at these Linux alternatives.

@zak I have a working Pixel 3a in a drawer, but the battery has aged so much from daily use that it now only holds a charge for an hour or two. And swapping out the battery means I'll most likely destroy the phone in the process.

I also have a PinePhone Pro that I use to tinker with, but the echo cancellation on calls is still broken.

@benpocalypse This is one of the major bummers about older hardware. What a shame.

@zak here's a post with a few other #linuxphone distros and then links to hardware support
