Dear Fedi friends,

I'm really proud to share with you a video I made: "Introducing the Fediverse: a New Era of Social Media" https://news.elenarossini.com/fediverse-video/

In this 4-minute video I explain what the #fediverse is to people not familiar with it, mentioning some of its great features and benefits (interoperability, no ads, no surveillance...) and I set it in contrast to the world of Big Tech social platforms. I argue that, with the rise of Big Tech oligarchs and the current political climate, there has never been a better time to join the fediverse.

I hope you will enjoy this video and that you will find it useful (maybe as a tool to introduce your friends, family, colleagues, school administrators, local government officials to it).

The fediverse has truly changed my life, making me a better, more empowered digital citizen. I am endlessly grateful for it, so this is my contribution to the cause ❤️

I am also incredibly thankful for the work of @samaaberg and @patel.riyen who helped me bring my vision to life with their amazing cinematography skills and their assistance throughout the process, providing brilliant feedback to the script / edits from the POV of fedi newbies.

And I was also moved by the generous help of people of the Fediverse who volunteered to translate the script into many foreign languages: @jan @fritjof @erikkemp @sknob @severin @clabru @tarcisiosurdi @hongminhee @danielcasanueva @ainali @nacly

Lastly, I'm thankful for the opportunity I had to premiere the video last week at #FediForum - thank you @j12t and @anca

The video is up on my self-hosted PeerTube instance (thank you @yunohost) and for now it is unlisted as I have no idea how my VPS will hold up. I also included an alternate location in the blog post.

I hope you'll enjoy it! It's been a real labor of love (a month of full time work on it)... I see it as my love letter to the fediverse 💌

Edit/update: THANK YOU for all the people who volunteered to have their avatar show up in the last shot. There were 750+ submissions and only 135 spots - sorry I couldn't include everyone 🥲

📺 Introducing the Fediverse: a New Era of Social Media

A 4 minute video that aims to introduce the Fediverse to people not familiar with it

Elena Rossini
Thank you for making such a truly inspiring “Fediverse ad”. 🖤

@elena
Awesome!
Great job!

Thank you! Very, very, very much! :)

@elena

It's amazing! Well done to you and your team 🧡

@newsmast thank you! I hope you can spot the avatars of @michael and @saskia in the last shot 😉

Absolutely excellent @elena 🎉

Fantastic work. Thank you.

@elena I closed the window after the tenth time Little Snitch reported this kind of nonsense. I was barely 20 seconds in. Whatever video host you are using is working against your case.

@jwz @elena This is the P2P principle, to avoid the need for a server with huge bandwidth in the event of a large number of viewers. Having said that, I thought it was deactivatable for those who didn't want their IP exposed, but with the risk of having some latency if the server is loaded.

So that's literally the main positive argument for this solution.

@breizh @elena @jwz An arguably anti-bigtech snitching tool scaring people away from viewing an anti-bigtech video on a self-hosted smalltech platform, is a particular kind of sad.

@jwz @elena I may be completely misinformed here, but isn't this because PeerTube is P2P and these are other peers trying to connect with you?

EDIT: I started the video and let it run for 10 seconds and I already have 6 peers.

@jalict @jwz @elena

yeah it looks a lot like a normal PeerTube instance

@davey_cakes @jalict @elena It would not surprise me to learn that I have never clicked on a peertube link before. But any system that requires me to accept all connections from any IP to any UDP port, is not a system I will be allowing to access my computer. If that's what peertube requires, it's a terrible design.
@jwz

IIUC that's the webrtc connection between watchers exchanging bits of the video to relieve the server a bit, it's not necessary for peertube to work but does help. Of course it works without
@davey_cakes @jalict @elena

@rakoo @elena @jalict @davey_cakes That may be, but there is apparently no way to identify this peertube traffic. So my choices are: allow connections to any UDP port from anywhere; block every UDP port; or click "close" on that peertube video.

This system is not a good system.

@jwz @davey_cakes @jalict As far as I know, it doesn't require it. You can still watch the video.

PeerTube does that to alleviate the bandwidth of the small self-hosted servers where it is installed. When many people want to watch the same video, each share the upload and download, so that the server can survive the load. It's like a tiny BitTorrent.

@elena Great work! The CRT ensemble is a solid visual metaphor for “what was”.

I’ll definitely share it in my recruitment drives. 😉

@elena Very cool!
@elena @_elena the video is only "Not Listed", it's not set to public yet. So people on peertube can't discover it.
@elena it was soooo worth the wait. Bravissimo !
@elena awesome! 😍 Thanks for putting so much effort into this promo video. 👍

@elena @samaaberg @patel.riyen @jan @fritjof @erikkemp @sknob @severin @clabru @tarcisiosurdi @hongminhee @danielcasanueva @ainali @nacly @j12t @anca @yunohost

That is effing amazing. What a great video.

On the other hand... Why would we have expected otherwise?

Congrats, Elena.

@elena Good job. I will share this a lot.

@elena @ele @_elena
I really like the video, great quality and message! I only have one gripe with it: Your voice seems to be mixed to be only on the left side of the headphones, which is something I personally find annoying. The Music is on both ears.

Regarding the data used: It looks like the p2p part is working well, on my phone I had only a tiny bit downloaded from the server and the rest from peers.
On my work PC behind a proxy no p2p was possible, so everything came from the server.

@@elena Most excellent. Great job - to everybody involved.
@elena Looks great, thanks for all the work you put in!
@elena @samaaberg @patel.riyen WOW! Great video! Congratulations to all involved!
@elena Great to finally get to see it, very well done!! Very nice introduction to share from now on 😊

@ainali @sknob @fritjof @erikkemp @jan @anca @nacly @yunohost @j12t @tarcisiosurdi @hongminhee @clabru @danielcasanueva @severin @patel.riyen @samaaberg Dear @elena, I would like to thank you for the best #Fediverse commercial so far 😀 It's amazingly well made and not overwhelmingly informative.

While we are at it though, I would like to ask all #Peertube admins and mods around here to mirror the video just like we did on vhsky.cz to lower the load of Elena's server so we could have this video publicly visible 😀

Thanks everyone involved

@elena Thank you, that turned out really nice!
What is the license here, is it CC? Can I, e.g. show it in workshops about the fediverse (sometimes commercially)? Of course while giving credits to you? That would be awesome!

@elena @samaaberg @patel.riyen @jan @fritjof @erikkemp @sknob @severin @clabru @tarcisiosurdi @hongminhee @danielcasanueva @ainali @nacly @j12t @anca @yunohost

What a wonderful video, so well scripted, filmed and edited. Any plans for translations? I'd love my friends back home to hear this in Catalan.

@albertcardona @elena

Hi! Very nice video!! I have translated the subtitles to Catalan. May I send the file to you?

cc. @_elena

@marcelcosta @elena

Thanks! Yes please!

@albertcardona @elena Albert, the video has subtitles in catalan now. Thanks elena!

@andypiper I was telling my friend about it the other day and she had said she thought it was "too complicated." Do you ever get this reaction? @elena
@CatsWhoCode @elena yes! Fairly often! My answer: it’s *different* to what you might have used before, but what you use now was probably exactly the same (confusing / complicated) before you learned it, and now is obvious. You need to learn a new thing. Often people are lazy and simply don’t want to take a step, but every time we learn something new, we grow, right? So let’s not be scared of different things: try them, and they will become second nature just like other things you learned before.
@andypiper thank you again! I've noticed that wasps can be pretty friendly if you aren't aggressive toward them. I also like scorpions a lot; my sun and moon signs are both Scorpio. I don't necessarily take that seriously, but I like some of the traits that are ascribed to scorpions, though. @elena

Such an amazing work!
(We were refreshing frantically the browser as if would change anything :p)
Now, it's online! Let's spread the word!

Thank you so much, @elena @samaaberg and @patel.riyen !

@jan @fritjof @erikkemp @sknob @severin @clabru @tarcisiosurdi @hongminhee @danielcasanueva @ainali @nacly @j12t @anca

@elena Good work!
Thank you for being a part of the fediverse and trying ins and outs not only from user side ( which I done as well in span of me trying fediverse for 2~ years) but also from hosting side (which not many can/will/have to do).
The language used is simple and short enough that if you want Russian translation, can do it (have education but didn't get into translation business so rusty as hell, but Russian is my main language). Unless more professional offer is on the table.

@elena @samaaberg @patel.riyen @jan @fritjof @erikkemp @sknob @severin @clabru @tarcisiosurdi @hongminhee @danielcasanueva @ainali @nacly @j12t @anca @yunohost absolutely amazing video, thank you so much for bringing this to life Elena!!!
I'll be sharing it with everyone, that deserves as much exposure as possible.
