Challenging AI Hype and Tech Industry Power

“I think it’s very important to maintain that refusal is an option.” – Emily M. Bender “AI is not inevitable. AI – as it is constructed right now – is, I think, fundamentally anti-democratic.” – Alex Hanna “One of the features of empires is that they’re made to feel inevitable. [But] throughout history every single […]

Big update: The Internet Archive has launched a new version of GifCities, the search engine for vintage GeoCities GIFs. It's now easier to explore the glitter, chaos, and charm of early web animation.

Search better. Share better. Blink more.

🎯 Does early success in science funding shape the rest of your career?

New RoRI study says yes.

The ‘Matthew effect’ — early winners keep winning — holds across funders & countries.

As promised, the @peertube fundraising campaign seems to be storming ahead, so here's a new - and rather hastily edited - video from NW #Greenland fieldwork just up on @tilvids Just in case anyone finds it interesting and fun. I made this in shotcut. At some point I'll work out how to annotate them properly I guess...

Enjoy!
Edit: oh and support peertube if you think it sounds fun?

Since I first shared this link on Friday, the amount raised has shot up by more than € 6000, not taking credit for that but well done #fediverse
If we get to the €35000 target this week, I promise to post a couple of new #Greenland  #science vids on my @tilvids channel.  @icesheets_climate
Who else is in? 8 days to go.

https://fediscience.org/@Ruth_Mottram/114641673922538397 - Apropos @peertube the french developer collective @Framasoft are currently trying to raise the (for #bigTech derisory) amount of EUR 75,000 to develop the opensource #fediverse competitor app to Youtube. Maybe chuck 'em a few euros if you think it useful?

@RoRInstitute what's missing from this guidance (unless I missed it) is any consideration of whether or not there are any gains to research as a whole for using this scheme, as compared to gains for the funder. It proposes a scheme where there would be 12 reviews per proposal. That's a huge increase in review burden, and consequently a huge loss in productive research time. Is that offset by improvements in allocation accuracy? How is that measured?
