Apropos @peertube the french developer collective @Framasoft are currently trying to raise the (for #bigTech derisory) amount of EUR 75,000 to develop the opensource #fediverse competitor app to Youtube. Maybe chuck 'em a few euros if you think it useful?

@Ruth_Mottram @peertube @Framasoft Surely Framasoft could make an application for Horizon funding if they can market themselves as a non-US company supporting EU science?

Or a more general EU seedcorn funding under technology?

@Ruth_Mottram @peertube @Framasoft isnt #newpipe exactly that? Open source client for #peertube ...

@d4m13n @Ruth_Mottram @Framasoft

There are a number of reasons why we didn't contribute to the NewPipe app (which we still like a lot!).

First of all, the goal is to make PeerTube more accessible to non-tech-savvy users.
However, NewPipe is virtually unknown outside of this sphere.

Of course, the fact that NewPipe is not available on the Play Store (or on iOS) plays a huge role.

These are not the only issues, of course, there are others, such as (in no particular order):
- The need for an application that manages federation with an interface designed for
- The technical changes required to add all the features are certainly extremely significant
- The number of back-and-forth exchanges with the NewPipe team needed to move development forward (with our own app, we can iterate much more quickly).

I'm curious about how Peertube instances will cope with the costs of storage and bandwidth, which I imagine will be substantial compared to Mastodon and similar. What's the thinking? Still doable by user donations, or something else?

@simon_on_energy @Ruth_Mottram @Framasoft Storage is always an issue (but the aim is to have platforms that aren't too big), but the bandwidth issue can be very much diminished with our P2P system, which can be very efficient in the case of very popular content: https://joinpeertube.org/news/stress-test-2023

Interesting, thank you.

Seems to me that the P2P approach deals with live streams and single viral videos (which is really neat!) but not a case where a thousand clients all ask for different videos. I guess this simply comes under "don't let instances get bigger than you can resource".

And I guess the same applies to storage.
