Internet Archive is looking for engineering managers with a rare set of experiences, and we could use your help.

Do you know someone with extensive experience using PHP as a systems language? Someone who has gardened a petabyte-scale system under high load? Is this person a player/coach engineering manager who enjoys helping other people succeed?

If you do know someone like this, or someone close, I would love to talk to them.

Apply at this link and drop me a line:

Recruitment

@avdempsey dog I wish I knew someone that interesting
@efi @avdempsey I'm amazed by the fact that such a person could even exist? This seems like an advert for a team, not one person?
@alextually @avdempsey leader positions that matter are wild
@avdempsey Are you going to offer them a job or therapy?

@cast81 @avdempsey

Everyone going "Oh no", but PHP has been around for decades (~31 years) because it works reliably and is well documented.

@cast81 @avdempsey Someone has to stress test the therapist before they put them under load.
@avdempsey ...PHP as a systems language...
@avdempsey „php as a systems language“ ohno
@avdempsey This is a really interesting role! The must be a US citizen or resident requirement is an unfortunate restriction.
@oisin @avdempsey unfortinate for the budget but sometimes there are reasons to overpay. must be one in effect here I'd presume.
@avdempsey I got two out of three and learn fast?

@avdempsey

This might actually be up my alley, unfortunately it's U.S. Citizens only.

Good luck, glad to know I'm not the only one who has PHP running as a systems language in places...

@avdempsey I would love this, but I haven't worked in PHP in some time.
@dgentry PHP-at-scale expertise is one thing we're looking for, but we're just as interested in help getting better at building technical teams, and deep networking know-how is always welcome.
@avdempsey I applied, I'm very enthused about the Archive's mission.

@avdempsey I'd be very tempted if I hadn't just started a job. :-)

Remember to use the #PHP hashtag for more reach.

@Crell @avdempsey what a good value add. I love people who bring not just skills but positivity and added value to stuff like this. respect!
@avdempsey is there any opportunity for OJT?
@avdempsey Maybe some of the 18F folks that were fired by DOGE?
@petekrz @avdempsey DOGE extras? why were they working for a terrorist organisation
@falcennial @petekrz @avdempsey
If you feel this way, our messaging isn't getting across. 18F was liquidated by DOGE because of our resistance to them. We are among their first victims. We are currently taking legal action against DOGE.
@skiles @petekrz @avdempsey what a great message. go fuckin get em J 💪💪

@avdempsey I would also like to talk to them. Or at least hear them give a talk. 😁

But seriously, I'm happy to see archive.org looking for great people. And completely unrelated news, I'm going to go increase my monthly donation now. 💰

@avdempsey predictable anti-PHP snark coming out here while ignoring the fact that the biggest public service websites (Wikipedia, Internet Archive, etc) are PHP and do more good than virtually anything else on the internet.

It looks like a fantastic role.

@serpentroots @avdempsey it sure does! but it just occurred to me we should not discount the value of the wrong persons decisively and clearly self-eliminating. every single PHP hater with an opinion or feedback on the role or "my solution is better" empty talk posturing is an application that the team do not have to review and interview and waste time on. every single hater and empty talker refines the match between this dope opportunity and the right person. the fedi is efficient!
@falcennial @serpentroots @avdempsey presumably they wouldn't apply in the first place though
@serpentroots It's a lot of dissonance for me because UGH, I don't want to work with that language EVER again, it's just an absolute shit tornado... but the *impact* of the role is so positive.
@avdempsey it's a shame this is in the US!
@avdempsey petabyte scale, no problem. OpenLDAP can handle that without breaking a sweat. Doing that in php, hm... that's expecting an awful lot.
@hyc @avdempsey ini_set('memory_limit', '-1');
@avdempsey Hello! I applied to this role today. I know it's hard to find real candidates among the flood of LLMs, so, I'm just reaching out here to say: I am real. I have experience scaling systems up by 10s of thousands of users, and I have diverse management experience!
@avdempsey @mae Candidates must be a U.S. Citizen or a U.S. Resident with authorization to work. 🥴
@avdempsey @ErickaSimone the "mustbe a US citizen" could be better stated at the top so most people now this job is not for them :/
@avdempsey @foone I don't know your attitude towards PHP but I do know you love archives...
@avdempsey Hey, I'm solidly adjacent to this. Hi!
