I cannot overstate how much I hate the short character limits on most instances here. It does not make people post short, concise messages (as if brevity is even a thing I’d want to optimise for) it makes people post essays as sequences of 47 toots. Which then all appear in my timeline. In reverse order.
@david_chisnall Totally agree... and I'm happy with our 11k limit.
@david_chisnall for.this character limit issue alone we are also considering moving instances. its a weird artifact ... nobody is forced to follow profiles that post longer things, and also the fediverse user interface can hide it behind a "show more" button. there is no real problem today that warrants a 500 char limits (and don't get us started on blue sky's limit of.300 chars)
@david_chisnall simple: just go to the head of the thread, then read each post in order, hitting the button to mute it for a day before reading the next. Easy, peasy 😇
@david_chisnall Several times, I've wanted to end my post with "(continued in the alt text)"
@david_chisnall Character limits should be applied at the receiving end. Because some people hate long posts so much, they should have the ability to filter them.
@nen That’s one of the reasons that this is so bad. There already is an option (with good defaults) to restrict the size of a post that is shown. If you see a long post, it will end with a ‘read more’. You can skip it or expand it. If an instance has a low character limit, you lose this and are bombarded by a load of small posts and you need to either find the first one if you want to read them all or skip them all.
@david_chisnall @ielenia all it does is make me skip out on important details and try find synonyms for what I’m saying that use less letters and remove punctuation marks and other grammar stuff
@david_chisnall I should make an instance that restricts posts to like 10 characters and watch the world burn
@david_chisnall that's true I think. I was surprised to find out that I'm limited to like 500, am not sure why
@sammypanda I think that’s the Mastodon default, I think. It is a terrible default and good instance admins change it, but a lot of people stick with defaults and assume that they were picked for a good reason.
@david_chisnall try. i believe in you david.
