Mr. Laffy and I just had lunch with some friends here in #Canada, and they told us of 2 separate incidents at the border (coming into the US)--- white people who they know personally-- where the border officials demanded to know who the people supported politically. Oh, not Trump? They refused them entry, told them they couldn't come in for 5 years.

I know there must be more details that I'm forgetting, but that's the gist. Can't answer questions if you have any.

@GottaLaff Lordy.
@WarnerCrocker we were stunned... because they were white. Honestly, the first thing I asked was, Were they white?
@GottaLaff @WarnerCrocker Indeed. Stunning to have a loyalty oath at the border. Coming soon to a local traffic stop in a red state?
@garylerude @GottaLaff No doubt. I saw a post somewhere this afternoon that said there was an ICE checkpoint on 15 between Vegas and LA.
@WarnerCrocker @garylerude @GottaLaff When my wife saw some suspicious ICE activity I informed the local media when/where.
@WarnerCrocker @garylerude @GottaLaff during the Reagan administration there was a stop between CA and AZ on I-10. I was asked where I was born. The «Officer» didn’t know Pennsylvania, insisted it was a country. My passport, birth certificate, clearance authorization letter notwithstanding. It went downhill from there.
@garylerude @GottaLaff @WarnerCrocker Pretty likely if it's not already happening.
@GottaLaff This isn't legal and we have to somehow fight this.
@MiriShuli @GottaLaff If you're Canadian, contact your reps in parliament and let them know. This violates treaties.
@GottaLaff
If the assholery gets any worse, I suggest closing off the ALCAN highway.

@GottaLaff
Easy solution. Don’t go to America.

#BuyCanadianByeAmerican

@caspercdn We don't anymore. We stopped months ago.
Podcaster David Pakman just dropped a video saying he is considering leaving the U.S. for Canada or his native Argentina. On my feed here earlier today.
@GottaLaff
Wouldn't Canadians support Canadian parties & teams?
@Nazani tgat was my take … simply answer who you support in your country… and say something think like ‘I can’t support any American politician as I’m not a citizen’
@GottaLaff I would say, none of your business... and I would be banned for 5 years. Totally okay with that.
@GottaLaff I would say they’re saying the quiet part out loud, but that’s been going on for a while. They’re now shouting it.
@GottaLaff Reason number 8647 not to go to the USA...

@GottaLaff A few days ago I spoke to an Iranian with a US green card, who has an American (citizen) wife. He recently flew to Iran and back to the US with zero problems. I asked what airport he entered, and he said JFK.

I bet at least some of the problem is due to luck of the draw—which agent are you seeing as you come through the line? I also bet that locations that see fewer crossings might be tougher—trying to “prove” they are doing a good job—or trying to reach a quota number.

@GottaLaff

Sounds about right.

ICE has been given arrest quotas; I believe the border guards have as well. Refusing entry (with or without taking them into custody) counts towards that quota.

The 5-year thing isn't new; being turned away from the border for any reason has always been grounds on its own for a 5-year no-entry ban. I don't know if they're enforcing it more than previously.

#gestapo #MangoMussolini

@cazabon Good to know about the 5 year ban. It was new to me. But to question loyalty to Trump (or anyone) at the border?!.... is new.

@GottaLaff

Oh yes, political loyalty tests for entry are definitely new for the USA. I don't think they did them even during the Red Scare.

It's kind of new territory for a stable western democr... never mind.

@GottaLaff As far as I know ..it's no one's business who one is politically aligned with in Canada ...
@Lstn2urmama Doesn't matter to Trump's border patrol
@GottaLaff My relatives had good treatment coming back from the states where they were assessing on selling their property and said it was better than expected ...
@Lstn2urmama yes, of course, that happens too... but not really the point here.
@GottaLaff Trump takes it personally if you don’t support him. He can then get very nasty. That’s the character of the US President and his country right now. Beware and take care!
@GottaLaff Good to know
@Deixis9 We were pretty sickened. And stunned.
@GottaLaff i juat read this to some friends. We all want to know more.
@spocko In replies, someone told me that the 5 year thing is not uncommon. What IS uncommon, but becoming MORE common, is that border officials are using it against anyone who isn't loyal to Trump.

@GottaLaff My brother and I have been having a back and forth about him getting a passport,while I'm renewing mine.

I tried to explain to him that; as Black Americans,we could be detained by ICE goons anywhere. Or by BP.

I carry my passport and birth certificate with me at all times,along with my driver's license,to prove my citizenship.

@IveyJanette Smart of you. I won't set foot in the US anymore, not the way it is.
@GottaLaff I've had my passport since 2015. I've been ready to go. Just never had the $. Though right now,I'm not sure if I would visit Vancouver or Edmonton because of #maplemaga.
@IveyJanette @GottaLaff You don't need to be concerned about that bunch. Mostly keyboard warriors.
@mamiyaman @GottaLaff And guys sitting in mommy's basement playing video games.

@GottaLaff

Pretty soon it will be like that for us if we want to leave the US...
My urge to move and leave the US has gotten very strong since January.

@GottaLaff Do you know if these happened at a land border crossings? I've hardly done a focused search, but that seemed to be the case for the few of these stories that I have looked at a bit more closely.

(The distinction does nothing to change how egregious this all is.)
