Hi! I'd like recommendations for a secondhand exploitable e-ink e-reader, something akin to the 2016 Kobo Aura ONE. I want to be able to sideload apps like KOreader and Plato and access the filesystem like any other removable storage.

Please retoot!

@fluidlogic I've recently been considering buying one of the boox ereaders. I heard they run android, and you can sideload the fdroid store, and get the koreader app from there.

Plus you've got the regular app store as well for stuff like kindle and (and this has been annoying me so much that I couldn't read this on my own e-reader) the comptia self-paced ereader.

And also you can get tachiyomi for manga and such as well.

@a_e_sayapov @fluidlogic My son had a boox briefly. He did some forensics on it and ended up having to set up a black hole to prevent it from calling home to china constantly. In the end, he returned it. Buyer beware.

@XenoPhage @fluidlogic hey, thanks for the warning. I didn't realize they were Chinese.

I might look for others, but honestly I don't think it's a big deal, I mean regular android devices are spied on just as much but by US instead.

I have also done some reading, and if this is a concern, there is apparently a way to install lineageOS on some of their devices: https://invisiblek.github.io/lineage_wiki/devices/onyx/install

But there are other android ereader out there, and the same upsides apply for them

@a_e_sayapov @XenoPhage brilliant, thanks for this. I'd rather avoid Android if I can, or run a deGoogled fork.
