Hi! I'd like recommendations for a secondhand exploitable e-ink e-reader, something akin to the 2016 Kobo Aura ONE. I want to be able to sideload apps like KOreader and Plato and access the filesystem like any other removable storage.

Please retoot!

@fluidlogic I've recently been considering buying one of the boox ereaders. I heard they run android, and you can sideload the fdroid store, and get the koreader app from there.

Plus you've got the regular app store as well for stuff like kindle and (and this has been annoying me so much that I couldn't read this on my own e-reader) the comptia self-paced ereader.

And also you can get tachiyomi for manga and such as well.

@a_e_sayapov @fluidlogic My son had a boox briefly. He did some forensics on it and ended up having to set up a black hole to prevent it from calling home to china constantly. In the end, he returned it. Buyer beware.

@XenoPhage @fluidlogic hey, thanks for the warning. I didn't realize they were Chinese.

I might look for others, but honestly I don't think it's a big deal, I mean regular android devices are spied on just as much but by US instead.

I have also done some reading, and if this is a concern, there is apparently a way to install lineageOS on some of their devices: https://invisiblek.github.io/lineage_wiki/devices/onyx/install

But there are other android ereader out there, and the same upsides apply for them

@a_e_sayapov @XenoPhage brilliant, thanks for this. I'd rather avoid Android if I can, or run a deGoogled fork.
@fluidlogic When jailbroken, the Kindles are pretty straightforward like that. The Voyage has USB Micro-B, and isn’t waterproof, but the hardware is really nice otherwise.
@fluidlogic Anything from Pocketbook? It's pretty much vanilla Linux.

@vonxylofon thank you! Pocketbook looks very appealing. The prices aren't insane either. They don't do a seven inch non-audio one, though!

Looks like ereaders too are turning into distraction machines.

@fluidlogic I have had a 6" model with audio for the better part of a decade and I haven't played a single audio file.
@fluidlogic @mtechman i think you can do most of that with a PocketBook without having to do anything to it. I know I added support for Pocket and could add support for nextcloud by drag-and-dropping an application from GitHub.
@fluidlogic I'm happy with my Kobo Clara HD. It's not exactly new, though.

@carcosa Thanks. Not exactly new is a desirable feature!

Have you sideloaded KOreader or some other reader onto yours, or do you use the default Kobo reader?

@fluidlogic that's my reader! I have no idea what I'll do when it collapses of old age.
@Flux check out the replies to this thread! So far I'm leaning towards the Pocketbooks, though they're somewhat overspecified.

@fluidlogic I use a Kobo Sage for Manga, getting koreader on it was mostly just drag and drop from what I remember. Never had any problems with it. Battery might not be as good as other Readers, but I personally don't mind that.

Second hand kindles are also an option since the winterbreak hack, be sure to check battery swap guides beforehand. Some of them can be impossible without breaking the screen. I recently put Koreader on some old Kindles and once it's running all is well.

@fluidlogic readers by inkbook could be of interest for you.

@Aubrieta brilliant, another European option: https://inkbook.eu

@fluidlogic I've been using a Boox tablet for sometime#, forget the model. One of the larger ones that can accommodate textbook sized content.

It's an android tablet. You can install google play if you'd like, or Aurora, or FDroid. The UI has been heavily customized to make it work well with it's eink display. They make a pile of devices, so take your pick.

@fluidlogic I like the Onyx Boox e-readers because they run Android, so you can do all kinds of stuff with them!

@fluidlogic I just jailbroke a 2015 paperwhite and it does everything you’ve listed.

I got a hand me down 2015 Kindle Paperwhite from my daughter—is that a hand-me-up?—after we upgraded her to a new Kobo Libra Color. I used #WinterBreak to jailbreak and got #KOReader installed and it’s a nice little reader that syncs easily with Calibre. No Amazon involved. The Kobo Libra is an extr...

@fluidlogic another Kobo aura maybe? I have an aura H2O Ed 2 and it's still working well
@zarel they hold their value well! They're very pricey second hand in my country.
