A Texas Cop Searched License Plate Cameras Nationwide for a Woman Who Got an Abortion

The sheriff said the woman self-administered the abortion and her family were concerned for her safety, so authorities searched through Flock cameras. Experts are still concerned that a cop in a state where abortion is illegal can search cameras in others where it's a human right.

Texas/SB8 uses a legal trick to bypass const. protections: it’s not the state suing, but private ppl targeting abortion help. So there’s no gov’t actor 2 sue—courts can’t step in. SCOTUS let it stand in 2021. Project 2025 picks up this logic for other areas. If that flies, any majority can control ppl by law—w/out accountability or rights. That’s not law—it’s system breakdown.

Instead of suing the indiv. plaintiff—which rarely works—target the law’s structure. A const. challenge citing “chilling effect” on rights (e.g. privacy, travel) is possible. Anti-SLAPP laws in some states help if the suit aims 2 intimidate. In court, use counterclaims 2 defend your rights directly. Goal: delegitimize the system, not the person.
