I think the blackberry vine #bikePolo "mallet"/cutter is a 3D printed head on a 7/8in stick with a slot for a utility knife blade on each side, lump of a knocker on the end, maybe 20-30Β° angle off the stick. Passing at 7mph, you need to be able to cut the green stems growing out and down, some upward, some overhead. None of the garden tools have this offset angle.
I'm ready for #BikeNite, let's talk blackberry thorns #BikeTooter, #pdxBikes, what's the pokey vegetation hanging out in your lanes? I'm thinking something like this (but a bit safer, cover the tips) will allow me to cut most green growth by simply holding out as I ride by.
I'm definitely going to need better blade retention and guards, but it cuts green grass, laurel, blackberry pretty well. I think it needs a thick clamp, almost a hammerhead on the end, ramped to make the blade shallower toward the end, rounded over to not snag on the sheath.
Current setup
Green laurel growth
Boxwood
Grass
With the cut and hold pruner stick, I can't always get a good angle, and can only cut one stem per twenty yards unless I slow way down or stop. I just need it to cut some or most of what I drag it along, and will get more next time, as long as it's cut before reaching out over the lanes, I can keep it at bay. There's also not much use holding vs just cutting if the cut parts get knocked away to the side behind me.
