Refused are fucking alive, but only until the end of the year. One last tour. In about a month from now I will see them at the Jera One Air festival in Ysselsteyn, so now is as good a time as any to dive deep into their discography, starting at their earliest release that I've got in my collection: the "Pump The Brakes" EP. Recorded in Sunlight Studio (Stockholm) in '93 and released in '94.

It's four tracks, it's rough around the edges in all the ways that I appreciate in hardcore. I remember reading that Dennis had a cold and his voice was not in the best shape during the recording sessions of one of their early releases and listening to it right now: I think this might be the one. On this EP there is no indication that these kids would release the absolutely groundbreaking "Shape of Punk To Come" only a couple years later. Going through their discography from start to finish their artistic growth in the early years is phenomenal.

That being said: sometimes I like the primitive version, too. Very east coast 90s. All energy. All attitude. I'll allways love this style of hardcore music.
