๐Ÿ“ฃ The rushed integration of AI into everything is a major threat to privacy, as we've been saying.

Microsoft Recall is a great (not great!) example of exactly why--it screenshots everything on your desktop, to give AI the data to tell you...what you were doing on desktop.

So, Signal took steps to protect you and everyone using Signal on Windows 11 from Recall's hunger for (Signal) data.

By Default, Signal Doesn't Recall

Signal Desktop now includes support for a new โ€œScreen securityโ€ setting that is designed to help prevent your own computer from capturing screenshots of your Signal chats on Windows. This setting is automatically enabled by default in Signal Desktop on Windows 11. If youโ€™re wondering why weโ€™re on...

@Mer__edith Thanks! This sounds like a really awesome feature (for those who are still using Windows 11).
@Mer__edith thank you for protecting my chats on other peoples devices!
@Mer__edith
I love that the feature is enabled by default. Thank you:)
@Mer__edith Perhaps the first ethical use of DRM.
@Mer__edith Reminder to donate to the #Signal foundation, if you are in a position to :)

@signalapp

Hello
Is it possible that you could suggest to #Signal users that they simply use #Linux instead of #Windows10

maybe a blog post or a message to all users about the #messenger ???

@c_th1 @Mer__edith @signalapp You're holding the stick by the wrong end and trying use it as a cudgel. Stop that.

@Mer__edith

Appreciate the work your team does! But Microsoft has proven a poor steward of their customers' trust again and again. Forced upgrades to Win11 and then forced usage of Recall isn't just immoral, anticompetitive, and stupid; it's fundamentally against what computers are to me. Computation is a tool for everyone, but the mega companies have decided that computers are just for them and the loyal peasants they dole a little out for.

I moved full time to Linux this year and I've never been happier to have a PC. Gaming is better on Linux, my computer does what I want and doesn't try to shove ads in my face or trick me into accidentally buying or subscribing for things.

Unfortunately for us, we still have to communicate with people who don't value their privacy, and therefore ours. Recall still gets to see emails I've sent to others. But thankfully, not my signal chats! Thank you again Signal team and Meredith!

@Mer__edith
That only protects the updated, default Win11 installation, i.e. the own side.
The DRM does not extend to the far side, right?

"to give AI the data to tell you...what you were doing on desktop"...

No.

To give Counterfeit Cognizance data to consume in meager attempt to make it more saleable and, therefore, more valuable to shareholder value.

@Mer__edith I had a slight panic looking at this on my Microsoft Surface screen, then remembered that I'd flashed this laptop with Linux Mint! Problem solved!

Well done for getting ahead of Microsoft's relentless lurch into full #surveillancecapitalism

@Mer__edith this sucks accessibility wise, but I think you've chosen the best path available for your users, so that is as it should be. Good work
@Mer__edith@mastodon.world

Arguably, if a user disable the DRM block in #Signal's settings, the #security and #privacy of the other people in the chat will be compromised. Do the contacts get a notification or warning that their conversation with such user will be exposed to #Microsoft #Recall? Do they have way to object?
