Another reason to not use ChatGPT: THEY'RE NOT ALLOWED TO DELETE anything BY COURT ORDER. (Straight up violation of GDPR if they're doing this outside the USA, BTW.)

#Oops Due to the ongoing case New York Times v #OpenAI, you cannot delete your #ChatGPT prompts and conversations as the court has ordered [1] on 13th of May that all logs must be stored until further notice. OpenAI is furious as that means "including sensitive personal information, proprietary business data, and internal government documents" [2]. The court is not impressed [3] and sticks to the order. @cstross of course US Court Orders have no force, even the US government ignore them.

@cstross Somehow I doubt OpenAI really delete all that lovely proprietary data after it’s been handed to them on a plate.

We need an update of the old Father Ted line, “oh, but those files were just resting in my account”.

@cstross Another reason not to use most US services/hardware atm
@cstross @NotTheLBCGuy @jwildeboer To think many are using it as “therapy”...
@fabienmarry @cstross @NotTheLBCGuy @jwildeboer isn't that how Scientology keeps it's hold over it's members?
They get you to reveal your innermost secrets on video then they hold that against you as blackmail so they can control you. The shit Tom Cruise must have said....
@cstross Yeah how would that even work? What's the procedure here, I might want to delete data as an EU-citizen
@CouldBeMathijs American courts don't seem to generally give a fuck what foreign jurisdictions' laws say (other than during extradition hearings).
@cstross
Legal holds are still legal (and mandatory) under UK and EU law. A compliant organization will delete the data anywhere outside their legal hold environment and stop processing it for other purposes and will remove the remaining copy after the legal hold is lifted, but they will preserve the data under legal hold.
