“the EU government servers are melting under the load of mastodon users going absolutely nuts with enthusiasm for civic participation” is a great problem to have 😂
@0xabad1dea I think at least a dozen of us have hooked up the JSON feed to realtime plotting lol
@0xabad1dea
Anyone know how much of this is Fedi-driven? Of course it's big here, but there must be something happening elseweb too.
@notsoloud I don't know but we have to be a lot to have sent it to our friends in other networks for the magic to continue! @0xabad1dea
@Cryptie I haven't done so much IRL signature drives in a long while (more than a decade ago). Since there was a big (even if not that big) consensus in my country to forbid these acts (even if the now ruling party and its even more right-wing opposition party voted against it, everyone else supported the law to make conversion illegal and penalised) people thought it was settled everywhere else. Young and old people, when asked, promptly became available to sign this initiative IRL.
@notsoloud @0xabad1dea

@jt_rebelo @Cryptie @notsoloud @0xabad1dea

it's done!!! 1,000,695 and counting.

and MASSIVE shoutout to #France, who put in 971% over their threshold, totally obliterating the support compared to other countries. #Spain were second with over 300%, and Belgium third with over 273% over threshold.

@jt_rebelo @Cryptie @notsoloud @0xabad1dea

1,003,310 now, nearly 3000 signatures in 10 mins. that's wild!.

@latelesley
Over 5000 per 10 minutes now, also Sweden reached the threshold, Italy approaching it rapidly, Denmark on a roll!

Keep signing! 10% to 20% margin would be really good to be safe against invalid votes...

@jt_rebelo @Cryptie @notsoloud @0xabad1dea

@latelesley @Cryptie @notsoloud @0xabad1dea the French are awesome, I'm a bit sad with all my People (the Portuguese) because even if it isn't over yet (we have a saying, "até ao lavar dos cestos é vindima" = "the harvest lasts up until the baskets are washed") we have fallen behind. I'll keep pushing for more signatures because we have to account for repeat signatures and the like to be deleted from the numbers in the end.
@notsoloud @0xabad1dea there is push from bluesky and tumblr as well
@notsoloud oh sure probably but it is like The thing here right now and I'm willing to bet a massive percentage of the signatures are downstream from a mastodon post (not necessarily that they saw it directly, but their their cousin who uses mastodon put it in the group chat etc)
@0xabad1dea Might be the only reason why there aren't 1m signatures yet. Less than 3000 to go!
@0xabad1dea I just checked Bluesky for this EU petition and I just came across some virtually unfaved posts. Can someone confirm this? Is it really only big in the fediverse? O.o
@frumble @0xabad1dea There's some action in Catalan-language bluesky it seems
@frumble @0xabad1dea i saw it being spread around a fair bit on bsky, it seems there may have also been a few large discord servers spreading it around?
@frumble @0xabad1dea I mean, I saw at least one post on my feed on bsky from relatively big creative (and my bsky feed is not very wide, and mostly non-EU), and also, people on tumblr were campaigning for this petition for months, and a big queer art account even blazed a post about it, so it probably was wider than fedi, after all.
@0xabad1dea Americain here who doesn't want to make the problem worse - what's going on?
@Epic_Null citizen's petition to ban conversion therapy in the whole EU about to hit one million signatures hours before the deadline
@0xabad1dea ah, sweet. I saw that petition going around a few times, but momentum on it was a little slow
@Epic_Null @0xabad1dea it really picked up at the last moment. it's been averaging 400 signatures per minute most of today.
@Epic_Null @0xabad1dea the best part is that the petition was originally created a year ago. It hovered at 290K this past Tuesday. Then people perked up when the urgency that the deadline is tomorrow hit and its gotten over 400K signatures since yesterday

@a_cubed @0xabad1dea @xerz Aww, you just missed the 1_000_000 😉
@0xabad1dea every time i reload the page more people have signed
@0xabad1dea @EUCommission FYI. This is indeed a great problem to have. Good news for EU democracy. But it is still something you, the EU Commission, may want to look into, as EU government computers should not crumple under the load of people's enthusiasm.
@0xabad1dea one might wonder what did they mess up for the servers to melt under the load of even a few million users if they are literal EU servers with unimaginable budget
@ity they don't have unimaginable budget, nor should they. You don't spend hundreds of thousands of extra euros from tax money on massively over-provisioning your informational web servers year-round in case they unexpectedly get really popular for a few hours.
@0xabad1dea I disagree - the servers should dynamically scale and be able to handle the expected demand, including peak.
@ity who is sitting around fiddling with setting all that up and testing it and maintaining it in case, again, the site gets kind of slow for a few hours once out of the blue? If the site were going to be this massively popular on a recurring basis, they'd figure something out. But this literally happened in the time between lunch and dinner today and there's no reason to expect it to recur any time soon, and as far as I know the site didn't even fail to load for anyone, just got pretty slow. So there's no problem, and trying to solve a problem you don't have with overengineering can only create new problems
@0xabad1dea well, I disagree, dunno what else I can say really

@0xabad1dea @ity best case here is if they could have been running lighter weight software that would scale better

But that's not exactly a thing these days, either, especially when you need to run validation checks on your input right away
