Which patreons do you support financially? - sh.itjust.works

And are there any you would support if you had just that little bit of extra disposable income?

Too many …

Mostly educational channels. I have to go and sort some out again … I’m above $100 per month …

Fucking Champ here

I support Extra Fabulous Comics and a comic called “The Lost Never Die.”

Extra Fabulous never ceases to make me laugh, and The Lost Never Die is a newer comic with an art style that I love.

Not many. I had to stop myself or else my list would look like remon’s.

+1000 for Bobby Fingers. Clearly you have good taste.
Civvie has some great stuff if you’re into arena/arcade style shooters. His Blood review is classic
I love Bobby Fingers!
The Deprogram Podcast

Honestly none. I don’y have thr expendable income to do that.

If I had, it couled easilly be 50+ youtubers, podcasters open source software devs, …

Defunctland and Technology Connectios. I just really want those dudes to keep making stuff. A 2 hour documentary on the history and merits of the FastPass system at Disneyland or how a dishwasher works is soooooo my cup of tea.
+1 for Technology Connections <3
  • StuffMadeHere
  • TropicalTidbits
  • AppliedScience

Just a handful, but I usually will add a new one when it hooks me enough that I can’t stop binging it.

Zero. I hate subscriptions. Idc what it’s for.
I personally think that’s valid. Do you ever make one-time donations?
I really hate monthly subscriptions. The only two I could justify are my $5/m VPN and 3/m discord just bc I used it so much.
Recently I changed discord to $1 to Wikipedia, $1 to archive.org, $1 to Lemmy. It’s not a lot but gives me peace of mind.
Surprises me that people pay for discord. Were there features you used that were (worth) paid?

emojis of my cat

None and I never would.

Edit: Goddamn you Zoomers are such cuckolds. Go pay for mods or w/e y’all do. We used to laugh at the idea of this.

Are you ok?

Yeah? Ofc.

I’m just disappointed that people are so gullible as to donate to multi-millionaire YouTubers and other e-celebs and content slop farms they form these so-called “parasocial bonds” with, addicted to consuming algorithmically driven content on big tech platforms and enriching their “betters”.

To go out of their way to hand more money over to rich people at any opportunity from subscriptions to ads to this, for increasingly less and less value. To bend over backwards just because they got a little hit of dopamine because of some pattern of blue light on a computer monitor dancing to the tune of our ailing civilization.

Each to their own of course, but goddamn I wish people were better. It’s like the whole world went crazy. Maybe it always was. Most people feel like aliens who make no sense, who’s perspective I can’t even fathom, whether it’s the internet or IRL, and reasonable people seem few and far between.

Each thing like this, another stick upon the camel’s back. Another bit of disappointment. Another weary sigh, yet we press on. Thanks for asking.

Atlas himself cowers at the sheer burden of hearing about people donating to content creators they like.
Yeah, something like that. I’m a sheltered little piss baby. But I’d like to know the rationale.
…what’s hard to understand about people donating to those who make content they enjoy or tools they use? It’s not that complicated. Not every Youtuber is Mr. Beast.
This wasn’t a thing until like 2 years ago and I’ve no idea why it’s become a thing at all. I’ve never once had the desire to donate to some “creator” on the internet nor known anyone who has.
…Patreon has existed for 12 years. Websites have had “Buy me a coffee” buttons for even longer. You not noticing something doesn’t mean it didn’t exist.

Yeah and nobody used them.

It stuck around in my head because begging was free, but when someone leaked the twitch earnings, it made me worried some people really were donating to those time wasting chancers on the internet. Turns out they do, which isn’t great. A fool and his money are soon parted ig.

I’d throw some money at the ‘free’ ones if I could afford to.

SponsorBlock. I watch hours of youtube a day and it’s improved so much by SB. It’s the creator’s full-time job so I chip in to support the project. I’d be devestated if it went away.
Donate

SponsorBlock is a crowdsourced browser extension to skip sponsor segments in YouTube videos.

That’s a lot of youtube
I support Infinite Backlog because I want to see that site thrive. Haven't found any other site where I can keep track of my videogame collection as nicely as with IB. That's my only Patreon thingy.
Currently just Jeff Gerstmann, my favorite video games journalist

Here’s my list, it’s fairly random:

Besides yahtzee, Frost was the only other guy on second wind producing anything remotely watchable. I unsubbed the moment he left.
Yup! Second Wind used to be on my Patreon as well until Frost left.

I tend to avoid subscriptions where I can, so the only time I’ve ever used Patreon was to access Dankpods’ After Show (back when it was exclusive for patrons).

I really should give myself $200 or so to dole out between my favourite creators and open-source projects.

  • AnyAustin
  • NerdCubed
  • Many A True Nerd
  • Jacob Geller
  • CGP Grey
  • Physics for the Birds
AnyAustin is one I would consider. I did support OboeShoesGames for a while but he moved more to streams instead of shorter snarky videos.
Jon mentioned 👀

Some More News, Clooos, and Zach Weinersmith (comic artist of SMBC and more)

TrueAnon

Brutalmoose

YMS

Jim can’t Swim

Casefile

Right now its just Second Thought, I’m a leftist and love the content he creates. His video on East Palistine is really good and I would recommend it

How Corporate Greed Destroyed East Palestine

YouTube
Nerd of Mouth // Wizard and the Bruiser
Special Books by Special Kids. He and his wife interview people with different disabilities and give you a little peek into their lives. Really interesting and inspiring stuff.

InRangeTV and A Better Way 2A.

I’m strongly considering supporting Galen Druke’s GD Politics now that FiveThirtyEight has been shuttered.

Lions Led by Donkeys! It’s a great podcast for history nerds!
How different is it from WTYP?
I couldn’t tell you unfortunately, as I’ve never listened to WTYP. I’ll be happy to download a couple of episodes to check it out, though!
Currently Souls Remnant, though only the lowest tier because I am broke
I stopped because I’m unemployed currently. But I supported a few 3d artists.
Time Suck and PBS Space Time
ContraPoints, she only charges on months she produces content- it’s not even every month if she isn’t productive. Her Tangent videos are worth it.
ContraPoints is fantastic, but I have a hard time watching the content if I’m not in the headspace for it.
fair, but her tangents are more varied in topic she has videos on psychedelics, spirituality, the Barbie movie, etc.
Huh, I would like to see that.
it’s only $2 to get access to all the Tangents, well worth it
