It is fucking impossible to own a modern device today.
If you dont update your device - your fucked because security

If you update your device - the vendor fucks you with some bullshit "we've updated our terms and services"

@selea I mean, you can. It just has to be offline like f.e. those FiiO MP3 players.

@Natanox

In Sweden, you'll be fucked since you can't pay your bills, get groceries, take the bus or train, and so on.

@selea Like, not at all? 🫣 I know it isn't as easy or (unfortunately) as cheap, but so far you could absolutely navigate around and get everything done in Hamburg, Germany, without a phone.
@selea Yeah, because of that I really hope that Linux smartphones will someday be practical for everyday use. I feel like the Linux/Unix-like (NOT YOU macOS) Devices are the last ones I really kinda own.
@selea @alexadeswift The informed market is crying out for open source devices
@selea It's not impossible but it's not easy or cheap.
@selea I wish this behavior were limited to proprietary software. Sometimes forking means setting up a bunch of infra too
@selea Assuming your device isn't 2 years old already and your vendor still even bothers with security updates to begin with. :')
@finlaydag33k @selea At least the big vendors are closer to 5-7 years of security updates now. Still not great (and still getting all the other undesired updates at the same time), but better than having to trash a perfectly working phone after 2 years.

@saua @finlaydag33k

The problem is that those vendors can whenever they want, change their policy that you are forced to accept because they shove new shit into your throat

@selea "if you agree to these terms, you agree that your data may be used to train machine learning models"
@selea And also the planned obsolence of them pushing an operating system update to your device that is too computing-heavy and makes it slow.
@selea If only there were nice modern devices that did not require internet access.
@selea i'm all for going back to dumb phones and other dumb tech

enshittification has made modern tech intolerable
@selea Seems every #Spamsung update I get resets my permissions and notifications to the default all-seeing eye of Sauron mode.
@selea Solution: get a device like the Lite Phone, which won’t push bullshit on you and is also so unknown that no one wants to pierce its security. πŸ‘Œ
@selea Our situation particularly sucks since we've allowed the worst private companies (banks) to be the authority for identification instead of- you know- THE GOVERNMENT! TBF there are other ways of identification for the most important services like taxes but for basically "normal" life a smartphone with proprietary software/firmware is required these days πŸ˜₯

@selea Only if you really think that "modern" means vendor/cloud-linked. πŸ™„

If you change your tool selection process, you can break free right from the start. πŸ˜‰

@selea absolutely true. Therefore collecting old computers and running them with Linux
@selea So stop complaining start working on opensource hard-ware and software to fight it!

@MisterMaker

So people without technical knowledge is not eligible to complain over an disfunctional trend in our society?

@selea You can complain all you want doesn't change a thing. Also if you can't work on it, then invest in it.

@MisterMaker

I did not ask for your opinion about something I already do.

@selea I apologize for my unwanted rude comments. Lets work together and put an end to these big companies screwing us over.
