And I'm one of them!

The people refusing to use AI

Suzanne Bearne, May 5, 2025

Excerpt: "For Florence Achery, owner of Yoga Retreats & More, the environmental impact is one reason why she vows to stay away from AI.

" 'My initial reaction was that AI is soulless and is a contradiction with my business, which is all about human connection,' says Achery, based in London.

" 'However, I found out that the environmental impact was awful with all the energy consumption required to run the data centres. I don't think that people are aware of that.' "

The people refusing to use AI

Worried about the environment and the loss of skills, some people are resisting the rise of AI.

@DoomsdaysCW

That part about the #environmental impact really stood out to me too. It's something we don’t hear enough about in the AI conversation.
How do you think we can balance innovation with #sustainability?
#AI

@squads I can see where AI could be useful in analyzing large amounts of USEFUL data (like composition of stars and galaxies, or decoding lost languages), but not frivalous uses like replacing human creators to save a buck. As for innovation, personally, I think we need to look to the past for that -- and figure out how to update ancient techniques for modern problems. People have grown used to storing everything on clouds, rather than hard drives with backups -- which only use power when they are needed. Decentralize data storage! As for environmental impacts -- datacenters should only be allowed if they don't do any harm to natural resources, are self-sufficient without using external energy sources (AND don't use nuclear power), or anything else that takes away from the needs of humans and the planet.

@DoomsdaysCW Totally I hear you on this.... you are very right, There's real value in using #AI for things that expand human understanding, not just replace human effort.....
And yes to save storage so much tech today feels like convenience at the cost of resilience.

Are there any examples of ancient or low-tech solutions you think more people should be exploring right now?
#Sustainability #AI #Innovation

@squads Absolutely! I focus on those on Solar Punk Sunday. A search for #SolarPunkSunday and / or #AncientTechnology should yield some results here.
