Also - kudos to the little girl, but how many tutors and specialists are involved to make this parental braggadocio? Compared to kids who do it without much help because they have to.

@Kalshann @The_Whore_of_Blahbylon her nanny (childminder) is Spanish, and her mother (Kate Middleton) encouraged her to learn the language. Even normal high school kids in Britain *are* encouraged to learn at least one foreign language (and have been since I was in school many years ago), its more a culture of anti-intellectualism and Anglo-centrism that has encouraged monolingualism amongst the white British, even more so than class divides..

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon Very true. Also that hyphenation annoys me. You might use it to call someone a two-year-old, but in this case you'd just say that someone is two years old, no hyphens necessary.
@llamasoft_ox Some people need to remember…

Interesting. I also don't like grammar nazis (or any other kind) in toots/threads but it's not OK to call out rather poor writing from allegedly professional journalists? I may have to think about that one.

@llamasoft_ox @The_Whore_of_Blahbylon

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon many children speak three or four languages
@peterbrown @The_Whore_of_Blahbylon not at 2 years old though?!
@elduvelle @The_Whore_of_Blahbylon comprehension yes. Formation of the words comes later, but they will have some limited vocabulary in each of the languages they’re using regularly

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon Wow, have you guys at DM ever heard of the concept of bilingual families? Or is the concept too foreign?

But aside poking the sensationalists for fun, I'm always amused when people hear a young kid knowing several languages when it's exactly the spot where you need to be doing that.

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon Just back from Holland, where most people we met speak at least Dutch and English. And for many, speaking another language as well is not unusual (German is common).

Across a lot of Europe two languages is not uncommon.

But yes, lets talk about how a 2YO with all the money and resources available has managed to achieve this. 2 languages to the level of a 2YO. Even I might be able to manage that.

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon also, most European kids speak 2 languages.

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon

This child speaks French! 😍😍😍

This child speaks Arabic! πŸ€¨πŸ˜©πŸ’£πŸ§•

@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon

Learning two, even three languages is a normal part of childhood development.

What's messed up is that we often only teach many kids just one language when they are most receptive to learning.

My husband has studied Chinese for 12 years and in that time he's gained what a six-year-old might have by simple exposure and frankly I'm impressed with him for it.

@futurebird @The_Whore_of_Blahbylon It also helps that as a kid every person you interact with thinks you're cute and is actively trying to help you. You don't usually get that kind of support as an adult.
@futurebird @The_Whore_of_Blahbylon I still don't speak Polish as well as my sons who definitely started later than me
@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon Two languages when she was two years old?! She turned 10 last week; if she speaks anything fewer than 10 languages, she's failed at life. πŸ˜ƒ
@davidnjoku @The_Whore_of_Blahbylon she's a princess. failing at life is different if people put you in line for the (hypothetical) ownership of a first-world country
