@Kalshann @The_Whore_of_Blahbylon her nanny (childminder) is Spanish, and her mother (Kate Middleton) encouraged her to learn the language. Even normal high school kids in Britain *are* encouraged to learn at least one foreign language (and have been since I was in school many years ago), its more a culture of anti-intellectualism and Anglo-centrism that has encouraged monolingualism amongst the white British, even more so than class divides..

Interesting. I also don't like grammar nazis (or any other kind) in toots/threads but it's not OK to call out rather poor writing from allegedly professional journalists? I may have to think about that one.
@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon Wow, have you guys at DM ever heard of the concept of bilingual families? Or is the concept too foreign?
But aside poking the sensationalists for fun, I'm always amused when people hear a young kid knowing several languages when it's exactly the spot where you need to be doing that.
@The_Whore_of_Blahbylon Just back from Holland, where most people we met speak at least Dutch and English. And for many, speaking another language as well is not unusual (German is common).
Across a lot of Europe two languages is not uncommon.
But yes, lets talk about how a 2YO with all the money and resources available has managed to achieve this. 2 languages to the level of a 2YO. Even I might be able to manage that.
This child speaks French! πππ
This child speaks Arabic! π€¨π©π£π§
Learning two, even three languages is a normal part of childhood development.
What's messed up is that we often only teach many kids just one language when they are most receptive to learning.
My husband has studied Chinese for 12 years and in that time he's gained what a six-year-old might have by simple exposure and frankly I'm impressed with him for it.
