Support for Windows 10 ends on October 14, 2025. Microsoft wants you to buy a new computer. But what if you could make your current one fast and secure again?

End of 10

@gnome This is great, but for some people in some situations switching away from windows may not be practical. In such cases it may be worth considering paying EUR25/yr for third-party extended support - https://blog.0patch.com/2024/06/long-live-windows-10-with-0patch.html Note that this does not require reinstalling everything, which is needed if you take the Windows LTSC route. 💻

@gnome never switching back to windows

@gnome

I have a PC that came preloaded with 10.

It is over 5 years old now. It still has not seen Linux yet, but that is because it has not seen power.

Just for spite, I wiil wait until after the 10 EOL before I install Debian.

...but windows 10 is the only thing that runs skype!

@hello

LOL. That ran. Until today.

@gnome @mousey Don’t worry osuosl will shut down the same time at this rate.

It’s a party.

@digital_justice_society @catnip @organvoid this looks like the perfect initiative for what we were looking at doing! Would be great to get any other local efforts listed on there so they can all be promoted in one go

At the start of the first Covid19 lockdown in the UK, I gave my granddaughter a second hand laptop on request.

It was actually a cast off from a customer, so already at least three years old. I put Kubuntu on it (OK not Gnome but the message remains the same).

It turns out it is still in use and I remotely advanced it from Ubuntu 20.04 through 22.04 to 24.04. Over wifi at both ends, ssh and a SOCKS proxy.

In my attic I have an elderly Dell server with a supported Debian based distro on it (Proxmox). It used to run VMware. I'm an ex-VMware fanboi with 25+ years experience.

MS can burn (bugger: I run a MS Silver Partner). Oh well, MS can still burn and so can VMware (Broadcom).

@gerdesj @gnome I found an Ubuntu 22.04 derivative that emulates different desktops. Zorin is based in IE and very actively supported. It's running quite happily on an old T540 with and SSD and 16G of memory I just had laying around.

@gnome Me está haciendo cosquillas la idea de organizar, con gente que viva o ande por #Veracruz, una fiesta de instalación de GNU Linux.

@categulario es la primera que me viene a la mente.

Why do all these pro-Linux campaigns zero in on EOL moments for Windows rather than listening to developers who have good reason for not targeting Linux? Address _their_ concerns. They make the software that keeps me on Windows.

I don't get this take. The reason adobe is not making software for Linux is that Linux does not have a lot of users compared to windows. If Linux had 80% market share folks would make software for it even if it was really hard to do so (and it's in fact easier to make software for FOSS operating systems) https://tech.lgbt/@Kye/114444095090005550

@gnome While the sentiment is good, I struggle to understand who would benefit by reading the DIY Install section. Because for new people it's way too vague and for people who do know what they are doing this guide probably does not communicate anything new.
@gnome the last IT technician i sent my lappy decided i need a new device, tightened hinges so i broke screen and need new lappy.
Hate you stupid Bill gates king of the windows!
@gnome replace crap with another crap? gnome is the worth thing happened to free software.
@gnome I’m going to go way out on a limb and guess this involves installing Linux. Possibly even Gnome.

@gnome browsing Ebay, I saw "Linux preloaded SSD/NVMe" listings. Not a bad idea? easy to reverse, less risks, doesn't need a location/event.

Challenges? not all hardware has easy access to disk/ssd/nvme, initializing user encryption, prop. Nvidia drivers, capital, warranty, fulfilment, (return) shipments.
