been thinking of getting a non-google email. anyone know a service thats good and that I can try out without fear of it becoming expensive/bad in the future?

I’m changing if it works reliably, has (most of) its codebase open source, and can be trusted to not forward data from my emails to arbitrary buyers. I’d be ok with paying a small fee for it if its really good!

Ideally I’d setup my own email server, but that isn’t a real possibility for me within the near future.

I used to not really care about this bc I thought GDPR protected me, but recent national news has made me reconsider. I don’t really want google to know what I buy online and what services I use, especially if its information my police state can trivially get from them.

I’ve also realized that gmail is just kind if a mediocre product. The UI is clunky and the integration across account products, e.g. mail to calendar, sucks ass and can’t be easily modified. This has been my experience with most monolith services, but its taken me a while to realize that I don’t need them at all, as long as I can find a replacement host.

Looking for a way to manage a dynamic calendar across devices that isn’t google calendar, too. Maybe that can be done with #obsidian?

@maya Hi! If you need advanced #privacy, @Tutanota might be a solid option → https://tuta.com Just keep in mind that email storage encryption also has some drawbacks in terms of user experience for instance (app lock-in). Moreover, if #security is a matter of serious concern, keep in mind there is no miracle solution - choose and use this wisely.

If you're looking for an easy Gmail/Google Workspace alternative, Infomaniak's kSuite is worth a try → https://www.infomaniak.com/en/ksuite
