This is why we don’t need #US #cars in #Europe
@notjustbikes Doesn't this picture have it all? Public trasit, US & EU cars and the point!
@stux @notjustbikes How are those cars even allowed? Is this in Belgium or Netherlands?

@loke @notjustbikes I have no clue!

This seems like amsterdam, but it could be any other larger city

@stux @loke @notjustbikes

It's Rotterdam :)

@cessie @stux @loke @notjustbikes

parkeren op zijn Rotterdams... I lived in R'dam for 9 years, car drivers there are a bit crazy, compared to other parts of Randstad...

it's of course not allowed, surely police should be there any minute. And the owner might have to pay a fine proportional to their income (at least for certain kinds of "hightway code" breaking). In R'dam the fine for illegal parking is €150, I gather.
Few more such violations and the car might get confiscated, as presenting danger to the public.

@cessie @stux @loke @notjustbikes

I still remember: "Zonder Hummer is het leven maar een bummer" (without Hummer the life just sucks)

@dimpase @cessie @stux @loke @notjustbikes I remember "zonder hummer ben je niets/ik rij je van je fiets"
@dimpase @cessie @stux @notjustbikes I'm actually surprised that these things are even allowed on the streets in the first place. But maybe they're not being classified as a car.

@dimpase @cessie @stux @loke @notjustbikes

Some cities have experimented with giving transport drivers the ability to issue citations, but the possibility of an encounter with an aggressive owner means you pretty much have to leave that to trained law enforcement.

@pieist @dimpase @cessie @stux @loke @notjustbikes To handle parking like that, the guy operating the tram does not have to issue citations. A battering ram on the front of the tram would suffice. 😉

@bzdev @pieist @dimpase @cessie @stux @loke @notjustbikes Trams are basically single car trains. Very strong, rigid underframe and steel bumpers. The one on the photo is, I think, a 4-axle Schindler from the 1950s and weighs over 12 tons empty.

On the other side of the ring we have a large RAM pickup truck, weight about 2.5 tons, made of air, plastic, and sheet metal.

Just let the kleine Schindler and physics do their work.

@dimpase @cessie @stux @loke @notjustbikes proportional to their income, love it!

@stux @loke @notjustbikes
The license plates are Dutch. The tram is number 10, and it's a "rondrit", a tour of the city.

Based on a Google search, I'm confident that this is Rotterdam.

@jozeldenrust
ah yes! Pretty sure you're correct indeed
@loke @notjustbikes
@jozeldenrust
As should be obvious from the green-white-green flag on the front of the tram 😉
Needless to say, this is a "museum tram", the current RET rolling stock is a bit more modern.
@stux @loke @notjustbikes
@loke @stux @notjustbikes Normally they aren't. Unfortunately, there are some loopholes which cost quite a lot, but obviously not enough.
@stux look up the hummer ev suv
@stux @notjustbikes I also guess that in the picture we see more bikes compared to the number of cars. But somehow the cars dominate the picture.
@stux @notjustbikes
Unfortunately the alt-text haven't

@stux @notjustbikes

First of all who is "we", are you speaking for all Europeans, Mr. President?

Secondly, most US cars are compatible in size, only very large US trucks are indeed too big for European city roads.

@stux We don’t need this shit in North America, either.
@tantramar no one does 😉

@stux @tantramar even in places that need #4x4 #pickup|s they want smol ones because they only have smol roads in both cities and villages and in between.

@stux @tantramar That's not quite true. If you have a farm, for instance, and you frequently need to transport a few cows in a trailer, you need a heavy and powerful vehicle. Judging by the looks of American streets, there are lots of farmers in the cities.

@tantramar @stux Hear hear. I'm getting pretty [numerous expletives deleted] tired of seeing single^1 white dudes driving their obviously compensating F-150 in the heart of Montreal.

[^1]: Meaning one person in the car, not, you know, unmarried.

@stux the land leviathans make everything worse

@stux

This also happens in the US. We have vehicles to big for our own parking spots in ways that block the right of way.

This image is not about US Vehicles, it’s about US Selfishness.

@Josie @stux

Selfishness and a desire to be intimidating.

@FrozenPeach @Josie @stux ...and entitled. Poseurs buy these things attempting to appear wealthy but are living beyond their means. They are sure to make a statement every single time they park by doing whatever they can to inconvenience others. We live in this post reality TV world where toxic shitheels *feel* rewarded for bad behavior. No one appreciates it so it's pure cognitive dissonance. Lying to themselves is fundamental to their existence. Cult of toxic insecurity. No one needs these.

@EricBono @Josie @stux

A guy I met once bragged about a settlement from an injury and he spent most of that 110k on a truck. Just dumb.

@FrozenPeach @Josie @stux Haha, my friend from college got doored cycling down a steep in hill in San Francisco, got a moderate settlement. We thought he could really use the money to pay off student loans. Nope. He paid for a bunch of us to have dinner at Chevy's (WTH), showed up in a custom Nehru jacket, & bought a giant 4x4. When he pulled up in my neighborhood, he told us, someone yelled out to him with a bullhorn, "Monster Truck Driver, You Can Park Anywhere!" Embarrassed him forever.

@FrozenPeach it also provides an interesting case study in policy failure. Large vehicles may not be classified the same way as smaller ones. Throughout much of the 2000s so far, car manufacturers built SUVs to avoid fuel efficiency requirements.

We've also failed to deal with car brain for the most part, so we still allow personal vehicles of just about any size in most of our cities. Smh. But that's another related topic

#transportation #USA #USPol

@tsyum

I remember the PT Cruiser being classified as a truck for energy req reasons. Ugly thing.

@Josie @stux

Doesn't the US have standard sizes for road lane widths, parking bay sizes, etc?

And US manufacturers ignore them?

@WellsiteGeo
Many traffic rules are at he state level. The US is way less centralized than European countries.

@WellsiteGeo @stux

Two sets of standard sizes exist. Manufacturers choose which one to build then they’re using every millimeter of the space. Then the drivers of those behemoths don’t care that they need to take the time to park correctly or they don’t fit.

With that said urban areas have smaller standard space sizes closer to EU sizing so there’s no hope at all for those drivers if they even wanted to be compassionate… which they don’t.

Driving a car that size basically says it all, and sends *the same message* regardless of if you’re US or EU.

@Josie @stux Then people complain to businesses to enlarge their parking spots. Rinse, repeat. My view is that if it’s larger than a certain size, you should need a heavy equipment license and be required to follow truck routes only. Sorry, you can’t park it at Costco, or a movie theater. And you can’t park a semi there, either.
@stux Anlauf nehmen und mit der Tram voll die Front der Dreckskarre wegreißen. 😈
@cyb3rrunn3r @stux
Wäre schade, wenn die Bahn dabei beschädigt würde.
Vielleicht müsste man sie vorher mit einem entsprechenden Rammbock ausstatten.

@MiBro @cyb3rrunn3r @stux

@MiBro @cyb3rrunn3r @stux Ned wirklich. Etwas Prestolit und die Tram ist wie Neu, das Auto aber nich:))
@cyb3rrunn3r @stux The tram is a museum piece...

@stux Do they get a fine for not fully parking in the spot?

P.S.: we shouldn't need them in Canada as well…

@EdwinG Yup, this is not allowed

But it's all the time it takes before the tram can move on pffff

@stux @EdwinG Towing the car away from that spot also seems a bit difficult 🫠

@EdwinG @stux

I got a fine for having one tyre on the end-bar of the yellow line (UK, road edge marking indicating parking restrictions), so I'd expect so.

But the way it projects over the tramway means the tow tuck is en route, called by the tram driver. It's getting impounded.

@stux Oh well, it is not just US cars. Also European-made cars are bcoming ever bigger and bigger, supposedly because it is "what the Chinese market wants". I needed a large minivan when the kids were younger and opted for a Dacia Lodgy which still ist comparitvely small given its massive inner volume. If I wanted the same inner volume today with a modern car (Dacia no longer offers this at all), the car would be outwardly so wide that it would not even fit into our driveway ...

@tobifant

A coworker drives an Amorok… For City to City commutes…

@stux

@tobifant @stux Even my VW Caravelle Long would fit better (although it might still be a bit too long for the tram to pass).
