Tree by Abbey Lake.

I think we've finally crossed into 2025, so a new thread. The old thread ended at https://mastodon.scot/@carusb/114351947348113749 .

Pleasance moat. The Pleasance is a square raised area surrounded by a double moat, now mostly dry, built as a party site by Henry V, nearly a mile from Kenilworth Castle.

Finally got my #FolderWeek photos scanned and uploaded to C1Pro. This is the other end of the small row of thatched cottages from my post earlier today

Abbey Fields in light snow. Sometimes you can sledge here, right in the centre of town! Good reason to settle...

Bit ironic that I've posted this snow scene on what looks likely to be the warmest day of the year so far!

Another #FolderWeek post: two more thatched cottages. The second has just been re-thatched; if you look closely just above the upstairs window, you might see that there are at least 3 different layers of thatch here! I love the fluid shapes that thatched roofs can have, but they must be seriously expensive to maintain!

@carusb Amazing. And somehow moody.
@nichni Thanks Niels, the weather gods were definitely on my side during that couple of weeks!
@carusb Is this Kenilworth Castle, England, or somewhere in Scotland?
@JamesAshburnerCBR Kenilworth Castle in England. I live maybe 200 metres from the castle as the crow flies, maybe 3 times that by road! It looks quite dramatically different from different viewpoints all around, and being local means I see it in all weather conditions. Town citizens also get free access except on special events (theoretically the castle belongs to the town, just managed by English Heritage!).

@carusb

#climatecrisis would have been another appropriate hashtag

@carusb what's the story here Chris? Just poor choices and not heeding warnings?
@shom Yes, basically just that. This route is used hundreds of time s a day. Normally the brook runs through pipes under the road. In high rainfall the pipes fill up, a bit of water over the road. We're all used to going through it, 6" is fine, a foot if you're careful. So we're all ignoring the warnings. But 2 foot, that'll be fine... until it isn't!
@shom Last year there were 3 stuck vehicles, and a fire truck was preparing to pull some of them out. A car came slowly, snaking between the stuck ones... and got through. Another car came behind, snaked through, got just a bit past where the back of this van is, then, click. Engine stopped, right in front of me. Guy's sat in his car with 30 people laughing at him from this side, looking at the fire truck guys also creasing themselves! Great entertainment whenever it floods.
@carusb Looks great Chris!
@tomnorthfilm Thanks Tom. I was pleased with that one. I saw the lady with the stick, but she moved out of frame while I was working out settings etc. Just about to give up, and she returned, facing the other way! Last frame, too.
@[email protected]. fantastic framing Chris. Thanks to @tomnorthfilm's comment, I had missed it when you first posted.
@carusb The same exact thing happened to me the other day on that photo from the Iceland Parliament building. That man walking across the glass walkway first walked left to right. I missed him then. As I was framing up the shot anyway he crossed over from right to left. I lucked out.
@carusb Nice job framing up that first photo. Architecture can be tricky with folders.
@tomnorthfilm Thanks. Finder's on the centre line, which helps.
@carusb When I was last in England 30+ years ago, I took a photo of a man working on a thatched roof. It's still a favorite shot of mine as it's not a typical tourist photo (although I have lots of those, too).
@analogfusion I tried to get a photo of the guys working on the new one, but I think I had the wrong lens so I doubt it's worked!
@carusb When my family took a 10-week camping trip throughout Europe in 1967 we were amazed at the thatched roofs. I still love seeing them. I bet you’re right though that they are expensive to keep up. Here is a photo of my Dad’s from that 1967 trip. He was shooting a Nikkorex F with Ektachrome.
@tomnorthfilm That's interesting. I reckon that shows at least two layers of thatch, too. (The bit at the very top is often replaced in between re-thatching.)
@carusb these thatched roof shots are lovely!
@shom Thanks Shom. There are quite a few thatched cottages round here. One was recently re-thatched, which essentially meant adding a new layer of thatch over the old!
@carusb that must be a fun process to watch!
@shom It is lovely. Re-thatching can take a week or more. It looks terrible midway, then they start trimming and suddenly it begins to look great!
