As a KDE Plasma user, I was always jealous of some of the nicer GNOME apps.

Recently I realised that I don't need to be. I can run GNOME apps on KDE Plasma just fine! Sure, they look a little different, but they work just as they would on GNOME.

πŸ—³οΈ Do you mix apps from different desktops?

@fell Let me quote someone from a telegram group:

By installing GNOME apps on KDE Plasma you will make KDE apps look alien, not GNOME apps.

@fabiscafe @fell Yep, KDE apps don't look remotely as good as Gnome apps. They really nailed UI/UX.

I use KDE Plasma for the stability but stick with Gnome apps wherever I can. There isn't any noteworthy account integration in KDE anyway.

@fabiscafe @fell My experience is GNOME apps don't feel that weird under KDE, esp those not from GNOME but GTK apps. KDE has very gd themes for GTK apps to mimic Qt look and feel, but not vice versa.

But still I use KDE apps mostly under KDE, apps like Dolphin, Spectable and Gwenview are just perfect fit with Plasma

@fell where is the "I'm a beginner user and don't know what those words mean" option?

@malbyx Don't worry about it :)
But if you'd like to know more, let me explain: You probably heard of GNOME and KDE Plasma. They are different "desktop environments" for Linux. They are simply different looks for the computer. Both come with their own set of apps: Web Browser, File Explorer, Messenger, Mastodon App, and so on.

Actually, there are lists:
https://apps.kde.org
https://apps.gnome.org

But nothing is stopping you from mixing apps from both of them, which is what I do! πŸ™‚

KDE Applications

KDE is a community of friendly people who create over 200 apps which run on any Linux desktop, and often other platforms too. Here is the complete list.

KDE Applications
@malbyx Oh yeah, GNOME and KDE Plasma are not the only desktops. There is also Xfce and Cinnamon and many many more. If you're using Linux Mint for example, then you're most likely using Cinnamon.
@fell that was an excellent explanation. thanks.
@malbyx @fell nothingburger. Eat, chill, repeat.

@fell As a GNOME user and someone who appreciates Libadwaita, I tend to use GTK4/Libadwaita apps, with some exceptions if there is no valid alternative.

At the moment, only a few apps I have make use of toolkits other than GTK (Qt, CEF and Electron), the rest that I use every day are in GTK4/Libadwaita.

@fell I use xfce4 and run whatever apps I feel like.

@fell

le doy prioridad a gnome, pero sino lo que venga xD

@fell used to do KDE on the laptop and Gnome on the media PC but both of them went to hell over the past few years so now I run Enlightenment everywhere -- and I should have made that switch even earlier because it's SO GOOD! :)
@fell I use fvwm as my window manager, and an assortment of apps on top (though, to be honest, mostly emacs and firefox :) )
@fell you can use both. Especially nowadays when overwhelming majority of people mostly live in their favourite web browser.
@fell I use GNOME and mostly stick to GNOME apps, but Krita is too good to not use.
@fell let's start with #Firefox, which doesn't user neither GTK nor QT. I used to use gaim until kopete became usable. Azureus for torrents (java). I was using simplescan (GTK) until I found skanpage (and got no real advantage). I use Qt apps I developed myself, which technically are not KDE. I uset to use gkrellm, but not anymore. Etc, etc.
@fell voted for using gnome and gnome apps, I like Libadwaita design language a lot and I'm borderline obsessive in terms of design cohesiveness. I feel like GNOME Apps and its developer just get it when in terms of UX design.
@fell I'm endlessly frustrated when a Gnome app doesn't let me use my KDE system titlebars. I just want my keep-above and pin buttons.
@bdf2121cc3334b35b6ecda66e471 I understand, but right clicking still works.
@fell on the taskbar? Sure, I get that I can still do it, but it's a PITA
