Google's AI Overview is so bad! Pat just referred to it as "the fifth dentist." ๐Ÿ˜‚

You can prevent the AI Overview from showing up in your search results by adding "-AI" to your search.

I need to try harder to remember to do that.

It's amazing to me that the term literally used to describe that incredibly common AI occurrence -- hallucination -- isn't enough, in and of itself, to mitigate this type of deployment. In a world where 'doing my own research' which means the opposite of critical analysis.

@grammargirl Maybe Iโ€™ll just make a macro that always injects โ€™-AIโ€™ whenever I hit the enter key and the active application is a web browser.

๐Ÿ˜„

Iโ€™m just kiddingโ€ฆ Iโ€™d never use Google for search.

@grammargirl

You can also use this instead of Google:
https://udm14.com/

It renders a Google search result, without AI bells and whistles.

A quick way to get an AI-free search without any extra work.

@projektionsyta @grammargirl I'm afraid to report that workaround is going away soon.

&udm=14 Search Hack: Could It Be In Danger Of Breaking?

My popular single-serving site that works around Googleโ€™s AI snippets could, unfortunately, see an infusion of AI soon. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Tedium: The Dull Side of the Internet.
@joeo10 @projektionsyta @grammargirl *could* โ€ฆ I donโ€™t have hard evidence. Hold out hope that Google leaves it alone.
@grammargirl and they said the internet was better than the libraries card catalogs. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

@grammargirl It can be hard when you're pasting a word or term into the search bar, because - at least with my tablet or phone - once the text is pasted in, it just automatically searches. I've taken to typing "fuck -ai" into the search bar, and then pasting my copied text onto the word "fuck."

I wish there were an extension that would automatically exclude AI results but we're not there yet.

@grammargirl For a long time I was using #DDG and when they finally added AI I could set preferences to not show AI but every time it updated the AI would come back. So I dumped DDG. Now I use #Startpage as my default search and...there's just no AI at all.

@Nonya_Bidniss @grammargirl

Thanks for the tip! Iโ€™m getting sick of DDGโ€™s on by default AI, too.

@grammargirl May I recommend a paid search engine? Kagi is incredible. I have to constantly look things up for work and it has supplanted google in everything I do.
@grammargirl honestly, ai in search results seems like the best use case especially given the number of ads in search results. I don't need it to read or write, but filtering and sorting is certainly nice. As long as it cites sources!๐Ÿ˜†
@grammargirl Also, you can use noai.duckduckgo.com instead of duckduckgo.com.
@grammargirl Consider using DuckDuckGo as your search engine. No ads, no trackers, just results.
@grammargirl
Don't google it, quack it, or as some say duck it. I swore off Google years ago and only go there accidentally when I install a new system with the wrong search engine default.
