Anyone ever done a transcontinental #amtrak trip? I'm considering one for work because I swore off flying, but also I've heard it's kinda a nightmare. #transit
@dixon I have but it was long enough ago that it is probably not indicative of Amtrak now. We went from San Francisco to DC by Chicago and returned by New Orleans. Expect delays and I strongly recommend a sleeper. The food was good on our trip but definitely check for current reviews.
@MartyFouts @dixon Agree with above. I did it over 20 years ago. It was enjoyable, but slow, and I felt flabby by the end of the trip (rich food and no exercise). Peeking at the Utah desert is a really nice way to wake up.

@dixon if you're solo or just with a partner and you're still young enough to sit in those seats for days on end and you have that much time it's probably not the worst but even at 42 I don't think my body could do the coast-to-coast trip.

Unless work is springing for the private bedrooms...

@dixon I did it years ago as part of my move to San Francisco. It was fun and the sights awesome, but got tiring after four days. Obviously, I can't speak for current service.

@dixon Yes. If you can possibly afford a sleeping compartment, do it. It's a unique travel experience (and one that's always in danger of disappearing) so it's worth it to do once in your life.

If talking to strangers is your thing, you will get some good stories from the people you meet in the dining car.

@dixon Absolutely loved it and would do it again in a heartbeat. But you need to afford a sleeping compartment. Sleeping in coach would be hell.
