One of my favorite things is when someone I follow asks a non-techie question on something I know nothing about, I boost as requested, and my followers jump in with polite but enthusiastic support.

You wanna cook this thing but don't know how? Your dog is being weird and you want to figure out what's wrong? I have this weird object, here's a picture, WTF is it???

There's a whole world of folks out there who want to help.

I truly love that.

@mwl the Fediverse is remarkably helpful and full of useful knowledge.
@pussreboots when it's good, it's gold.
@mwl yes! And I love the diversity of skills. I've met so many people who feel threatened by somebody being "smarter" than them, but I just want to surround myself with people who have skills/knowledge I lack - so I don't HAVE to know everything and we can work as a team, y'know?

@kitten_tech @mwl

Woah, we got a badass up in here!

Exactly. Diverse communities are stronger. Weird!

@mwl
What you're describing, Michael, is a feature, not a bug, of the Fediverse.

@mwl I'm kinda conflicted about Reddit.

It has created a fantastic place to connect folks needing help with folks who love to help (I've somehow managed to consistently achieve a top-1%/5%/10% comment-contributor status in multiple communities). Sadly, I haven't seen similar growth on the Fedi's Lemmy-likes.

But being Reddit, it traps that community expertise within its walled garden and then monetizes it ☹

@mwl it's closer to village life 300 years ago than to modern life in some ways

turns out most people want to be helpful, want to see others succeed, want to have others witness and cheer on their own successes, want to share their hard earned lessons before they turn to dust

@mwl This is one of the reasons I love this place. 😍
Love this! It's amazing how people come together to share knowledge and help out, no matter the question.
@mwl it's all about the memes..
@mwl @Susan60 I see part of what I’m doing here on Mastodon is building a collective brains trust. If I help people work stuff out when they need it, people will probably help me when I need it

@joannaholman @mwl

Yes, but I don’t think anyone here keeps count. We’re not that transactional!

@Susan60 @mwl no of course not. I more mean in the course of everyone being helpful it just sort of works out that we all get what we we need (often from different people than the ones we helped), not in a battering favours kind of way

@joannaholman @mwl

Kind of a pay it forward type thing. And it’s lovely.

@mwl Yes! I love it, too. It's one of the amazing things about the extended Fediverse community.
