In UHF+ contests, optical QSO typically requires electronic* keying and reception; so that finger on laser pointe4's button and mk.1 eyeball, Naval blinkers, or scout wig-wags aren't counted. (IDK if primitive optical counts for any Optical band gridsquare awards, not even if there is such yet.)
