While #FollowFriday may seem simple, it's like panning for gold - it takes some detective work to find the right accounts to follow about a particular topic on Mastodon.

Since we're seeing a lot of new people joining Mastodon and following us, we suggest that new users follow the #FollowFriday tag to get recommendations of new accounts to follow. This could help populate your new feed, help others grow their social graph and reach, get updates from interesting or your favorite accounts, etc.

We're still working on today's list, but in the meantime, feel free to leave your suggestions for European companies or open source projects to follow on Fediverse in the comments πŸ˜‰ πŸ‘‡.

We never get tired of suggesting to follow the same alternatives over and over again, as new people join us all the time. So here's a list of our previous #FollowFriday recommendations, updated:

(criteria: European companies or projects that have an account in the Fediverse and have posted at least once in the last year)

Many of them are very active and post interesting things, so even if you don't use their services, you might enjoy some of their toots that contain relevant information.

While not every company is in the Fediverse (yet?), those that are here are clearly leading the way and it says a lot about them! πŸ‘πŸŒ±

@fabriziob

Qwant abandoned their account, it's been inactive since 2022, although they post daily to their audience on Twitter. πŸ˜” We decided to only suggest accounts that are active on Mastodon (1 year max since last post).

We found a recently created account for Ecosia on Mastodon, but we're not sure if it's official, so we'll wait until they decide to verify it.

@ueeu In case you missed it, @hetzner joined this week. Do they count? :-) #FollowFriday

@GrahamDowns

They may not be directly related to the theme email provider or search engine shared on our toot, but they are on our list for when the FollowFriday theme is related to cloud and hosting πŸ˜‰

@ueeu ah, fair enough. I get it now. Sorry for messing up your theme! ☺️
@GrahamDowns No problem at all! πŸ˜‰ We're always happy to note suggestions for the next time!
@ueeu @ueeu Thank you so much for including us! We feel like we should clarify, though, that we do not have any U.S. owners or servers...that would be our sister company, @StartpageSearch πŸ˜…

@startmail @StartpageSearch

Thanks for informing us. πŸ™‚ So the two companies aren't legally related? (this will help people understand, because I guess earlier conversations considered that both companies were connected and part of an American group)

@ueeu @StartpageSearch Not anymore. We used to be two arms of the same company, but then Startpage was bought as its own separate entity by an American company...and we miss them every day πŸ₯²
@startmail @ueeu @StartpageSearch
Ah, okay, understood now, thanks! πŸ‘οΈ
@startmail @ueeu @StartpageSearch Hi, the legal info on Startpage.com says it’s owned by a Dutch company in Den Haag. No mention of a US owner. When did this change happen? Or am I missing something?
@ueeu @startmail @StartpageSearch
Hm… I thought so too. They have very similar designs, and the name should say everything… πŸ€”
