@BrianJopek

Dear Americans,

Which side are you on?

@sufferforme It's about split right now. Unfortunately, one of those sides is in power and grabbing more as quickly and aggressively as they can. And they have made it clear they fully intend to victimise the rest of us, too, as soon as they're able.

There are no "Americans" any more, as a people. We are supporters of the regime, or its perceived enemies. The regime has ensured critical support in key positions, to insulate themselves from the rest of us. It no longer matters what we think.

@wesdym if you have given up, get out and let us fight. But don't expect mercy or compassion if you refuse to speak up.
@sufferforme @BrianJopek the one hearing that 20% of the population wants to subjugate all of us. The reason we can be swayed is we just want to be left alone.

@BrianJopek

True… the 80% are only held back by fear of prosecution and a moral framework of the group…

Think for yourself!

@BrianJopek Anyone who can be "moved" toward cruelty is inherently cruel, but lacking an opportunity to express it at the moment.
@BrianJopek Do not let yourself be led to a dark place with fear and resentment.
@BrianJopek - and then there's the governments of Israel, who have had a history of replicating the worst atrocities historically put upon the Jewish. Irony 'R Us.
@BrianJopek Thank you for posting this …. “Monsters exist, but they are too few in number to be truly dangerous. More dangerous are the common men, the functionaries ready to believe and to act without asking questions.”
― Primo Levi
@BrianJopek Vonnegut was such a genius at humanising these horrors

Decades ago, a close friend from Scotland had described to me a similar "rule of thirds" that describes a third of the population as helpful and generous, a third as only acting in their own self interests even if it meant hurting others, and the remaining third as somewhere between.

The description I heard didn't describe the middle third as easily swayed, though that may well be true.

I heard recently that it takes only about 3.5% of a population to protest tyranny and apparently enough people will rise to action. That seems to support the notion (often misattributed to Edmond Burke) that "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

@BrianJopek That sounds about right to me.

@BrianJopek

Narrator: The percentages were optimistic.

@BrianJopek

This is supported by many decades of social psychology.

Treffend analysiert, auch wenn es traurig ist.

Sharp On point analysis, yet sad.
