From The Sydney Morning Herald

Planning to travel to Donald Trump’s America? Think twice. You are neither a wanted nor welcome ...

"Eight hours later, after three interview teams and extensive examination of my laptop and iPhone, they decided I'd come on an unusual route to the US, namely from Australia via Asia ... Although there was no evidence of wrongdoing, I was sent back to Australia, meaning I was unable to join the cruise, valued at $15,000 and not refundable."

@kims

The wrongdoing was that you did not fly with an American airline that probably contributed to Trump's campaign. Either that or there is no rhyme or reason.

@kims

This is nothing new. The Yanks have been doing this forever. Their border monkeys are just a Gestapo. Americans don't care.

@RustyRing @kims it’s only when you’ve experienced Immigration from the outside that you realise what absolute bastards they are. And that’s not just America. The UK is just as bad.

And of course, now under Trump they feel empowered. They are completely unrestrained and untouchable.

@peterbrown @kims

The immigration people in every nation are drawn from the lowest levels of society. In a sense it's useful to non-residents. You can gauge how low that nation goes by the way its employees behave on the way in.

Canadian border people are an embarrassment, too, but they have training and supervision and it shows. The Yanks have neither, and the difference is immediately evident.

@kims The #USIsATerroristState. Enter at your own risk. Avoid at all costs.
An Australian was denied US entry for bizarre reasons. He’s not alone

One Australian traveller says he’s now $15,000 out of pocket after being denied entry to the US after “enhanced vetting”. His crime? Choosing a cheap fare.

Yikes. A great way to cut carbon emissions though.

‘For the US economy, much is at stake, with the inbound travel market a major revenue-earner worth $155 billion in overseas visitor expenditure, and with millions of Americans employed in the tourism industry.

‘In 2024, before the Trump administration took office and introduced its extreme version of enhanced vetting, more than 710,000 Australians visited the US, a nearly 17 per cent increase on the previous year.

‘Now the giant French hotel multinational Accor has warned that bookings from Europe to the US for this northern summer’s high season are down 25 per cent. Airlines such as the UK-based Virgin Atlantic are also sounding the alarm to investors.

‘Extraordinarily, in the past week, experts, via the pages of The New York Times and The Washington Post, have been recommending that foreign travellers at least delete “anything you wouldn’t want someone to read or see from your device before visiting the US”.’

@FerdiMagellan @funguy2playwith @kims unfortunately it will only cut carbon emissions if they actually reduce the number of flights, but if they run the flights half full or quarter full it will do no good at all.
@peterbrown @funguy2playwith @kims good point though I imagine airlines would cut the number of flights to cut costs.
@kims The US tourism industries are gonna tank even before the economy! This garbage should never happen.
@kims I wonder if this person can sue the US government for the refund. They seem to only understand money talk.
@kims
A lawsuit is in order. Maybe a class-action suit.
@kims My country is a shithole courtesy of rich assholes.
@kims The USA are already uptight as hell and think Australians are clamouring to get in. For a time, I was going to move there on a partner visa. It wasn’t my first choice and he ended up migrating here. The questions in the visa application, my god. So arrogant. It’s a massive DOWNGRADE to move to America, you guys… get it through your thick heads….

@chozari @kims

There was a time when the USA was the holy land for medical research and a massive brain drain saw the best talent leaving Australia and heading state side.

Everything is going in reverse since November. Stunning how quickly things can change.

I still find it difficult to fathom that anybody fell for this conman the first time around, let alone chose him over someone as talented as VP Kamala Harris.

@ewen @kims So sad considering how much the American people are just so bloody sweet. They’re gorgeous people everywhere you go (well I’ve been to South Dakota, Arizona & 4 cities of California). Both experiences of the US have been nothing but 🥰 for me except the *horrific* level of poverty which broke my heart into a million pieces. But yeah, during my ‘19 trip, once I got past my WTF experience of LAX customs & went to meet lots of people, gosh I loved them. LOVED them.
@kims they would prefer you leave your identity and buy a burner phone and laptop once you arrive. That way, when they label you (something horrific), they haveplausible deniability. It' lucky you're not Canadian. 😉

@kims

Do not travel. Make the airlines scream.

@kims DON'T GO TO/THROUGH THE US. It is now a rogue nation.
@kims - Let’s let the US fester in its own wound of self-chosen inadequacy and xenophobia, and stop visiting and doing business with it.
It has a leader who wants USEXIT, let’s give it to them and see how long they actually survive.
@kims they can levy the trans equity acquisition tarrifs
And manage the foreign currency et cetra

@kims “Planning to travel to Donald Trump’s America? Think twice. You are neither wanted nor welcome ...”

Precisely.
