@georgetakei

It's not even clear why the rich people would want to convince anyone those benefits are bad, since they aren't paying for it, and obtain indirect benefits: workers who feel more secure, and are healthier and better educated.

Who pays for it all is the higher earning working class. They carry it for the lower earning working class and the nonworking class.

@Kazinator @georgetakei exactlyโ€ฆ. But what can you do - the uneducated will most likely not understand
@Kazinator @georgetakei the very wealthy want any safety net to go away, since they rely on a desperate labor pool to do anything they command. If people weren't desperate, they wouldn't have to serve the wealthy.

@jamesmarshall @georgetakei

I don't know about that. Have you been to #Canada ?

People have health care and some free education, and are still desperate. Those things don't put a roof over your head or food on the table.

(Given that the wealthy have to do is buy up all the housing for investment, why do they have to be against social safety nets, too.)

@Kazinator @georgetakei There are entire industries making hundreds of billions of dollars per year because the U.S. does not have universal, public health care.

Behind every big problem in the U.S. you will find an giant industry that is making money from things being just the way they are.

@georgetakei In the US, we've made the critical and probably fatal error of defending the poor misunderstood oligarchs instead of fighting them.
@georgetakei Rich people- destroying America since April 13, 1945.
@georgetakei @ericg I think the NYT, MSNBC, and all the media get some credit for this one. :-/

@georgetakei

Currently this seems to be a worldwide trend.

@georgetakei I get it, but... nearly any sentence beginning with "Only in America" is doomed to be hyperbolic bullshit. We're not so special, for better or worse; other nations have been duped by their ruling castes, other nations have incarcerated their citizens on grounds of ethnicity, other nations have fallen into tyranny.

Honestly, the longer I live in rural Appalachia, the more it reminds me of my years living in Lesotho. I may spend the rest of my life trying to convince folks that farmers are farmers and hillbillies are hillbillies and oligarchs are oligarchs, wherever you go.

@georgetakei

New Zealand had an example of rich people convincing their workers to kick themselves too.

Peter Jackson had his workers in a protest march against worker protection laws, some egregious lies were told, they won. One own goal to none.

@georgetakei I am still convinced the name is a typo and it should be "Faux News"
@georgetakei super-vast majority of the people desire these things. however, the super-megarich does not want to give up their control of the populace. if we do as other countries have done, then the super-mega rich will not be able to control the people.

@georgetakei The mousetrap works because the mouse doesn't wonder why the cheese is free.

I don't know why people believe there are free stuff in this universe.

@georgetakei Even though sad enough, I wish it would be true. Very same happens all over Europe, despite it looks somewhat stable.Poland just recently recovered, Hungary and Turkey is in between, what Russia and others already are and the USA under the current legislation try to becomes.
Italy is (only) one step ahead Germany, France, Netherlands and Great Britain among others to give fascist parties/groups/interests free reign.
Living in "interesting times" indeed is a curse - teach history!
@georgetakei so... how much do you pay for air, sunshine and rain? is there a tax on gravity?
@georgetakei What a sad truth but we have the same people in Canada
@georgetakei Rethuglicans have successfully gutted public education to the degree that the average American has been skewed to believe that they need to be against these benefits because it would mean POC would also benefit from them and since POC are unworthy to have these things these dumb whites rejoice in denying minorities these benefits. In other words, racism keeps the ignorant from enjoying these benefits. Read Heather McGhee's book The Sum of Us to see many examples of this.
@georgetakei (the solution is not to bring the rest of the world down to our level)

@georgetakei

Millions of white Americans vote against their own self interest because they're afraid non-white Americans would also benefit. Remember Ronald Reagan's mythical "welfare queen?" That's the mentality of MAGA type voters.

@georgetakei sadly it's not just America
