Cat #PSA: If you clip your (indoor) cat's claws, at the beginning you need to trim a little bit every few days; as the quick recedes gradually, the claws can be trimmed shorter, and they'll be easier to maintain. I noticed that the cats are having an easier time controlling them when they're shorter.

@Ameboid my only issue is making my cat understand that cutting his nails is not an attack and he doesn't have to mutilate me during the process.
@hummussapiens @Ameboid you trying to disarm him... What did you expect? 😅
@hummussapiens I know what you mean, we were fortunate enough that our cats are used to it so it's actually quite easy and it takes less than 3 minutes to do each cat. There are ways of getting them used to it, with treats and positive reinforcement but it requires time, patience and dedication.
@Ameboid In my experience, cats who have access to a good scratching post tend to self-maintain their claws. But maybe I was just lucky.
@timbray The scratching post was not enough for our cats.
They used to accidentally scratch us quite a lot and after I started trimming them it completely stopped, they have integrated knife gloves and the longer the knives the harder they're to control. They do not want to harm us, they're just struggling to control their daggers.
@Ameboid We used to do this. Then the cats figured out how to trim their own nails by biting them
@Ameboid Had a friend who told me her cat would never allow it's nails trimmed.
I got the cat, laid it on it's back on my lap with it's head on my stomach.
I made sure the cat was comfortable and gave it lots of attention while I trimmed each nail, with lots of attention between.
It was easy and pain free for both of us.

I've seen the same image re-labelled for nails of dogs, rabbits, sugar gliders, etc.

@sloanlance I did reverse image search and everything, I think oldest image was around 2011 but also seemed like it was taken from somewhere else. So I gave up.
@Ameboid is it the same for dogs?
@rnbastos From what I've heard yes, but so not have any personal experience.
