All this being said, I am NOT a swan whisperer. I used to feed one swan all the time, and he seemed genteel. One day, when I wasn't even in the park, he jumped off an island, swam across a pond, and ran across the park and across a road simply to attack me. WTF, swan guy? There were other people around, but his attack was especially for me. This was personal.
I wish I'd had grapes with me. Canada geese adore grapes. They eat them from my hand. It looks really weird, because you can see the lump slowly sliding down that long, skinny neck.

They're also susceptible to a little flattery. I always start with "Hi sweetie, who's a gorgeous boy/girl?" because they are gorgeous birds.
