Phase one of Elon's DOGE's Social Security actions is going to be like this,

*Layoffs. Gut the staff so workload can't be processed so new beneficiaries, except maybe retirees, won't get benefits, appeals wont's be processed, etc

*Fraud claim: Find any and every error and clerical error, overpayment, minor, harmless infractions, like bank account balances being over the asset limit for a few days for SSI disabled while their bills are processed, etc, even if not the fault of the beneficiary, and claim fraud and take program banishment, repayment and criminal action against the beneficiary.

*AI Computer photo/social media crosschecking, Run scans on social media to find disabled people doing normal things and claim they are able to do things they have said they are not, and run them up the flagpole for fraud

*Appeals: Gut the administrative law judges so beneficiaries who are able to appeal, can't get their appeals processed.

*Media: Claim high fraud and abuse, claim lower numbers of beneficiaries, etc and media will eat it up without evidence #SocialSecurity #Doge #USPol #SSA

2/ In the mid-aughts, I actually represented someone during a formal conference appeal who had their SSI disability cutoff and received a large overpayment bill from Social Security because their private, elderly landlord only went to the bank and deposited rent checks every few months.

Every so often, SSA does an asset review, bank accounts, cash on hand, etc, of persons receiving SSI.

Her rent payments weren't being withdrawn from her bank account even though she was writing the checks, so, several times per year, she had more cash in her checking account that showed up on her statements she submitted during the asset review than the law permitted her to have at one time.

This had other repercussions, like her Medicaid, which had eligibility attached to her SSI eligibility, being affected, also.

It was finally resolved but it was a big headache that lasted well over a year.

I can see Elon and his #doge boys running computer crosschecking programs, crosschecking bank records, etc, and kicking people off without any due process or understanding and wrecking their lives.

When they get there, there are only two people staffing a 50-person line, so he doesn't even make it to the front of the line before the office closes and he has to come back. Let's assume it takes him three months to straighten this out, and he misses a total of $5,000 in benefits checks, which, by law, he will never get back. @paul

In this unfortunate theoretical scenario, wouldn't the 66 year old man get an increased benefit for the rest of his life, and the life of his sole surviving beneficiary such as his widow after his death, scaled by linear proportion from the benefit amount at full retirement age (FRA) to what he'd receive at 70?

@jrredho Whether the delay will recover the missed 3 monthly payments at age 66 or not takes math I can't do with my smart phone, if that is the direction you are going.🫢

FRA is currently 67 for those born after 1960. Any delay after 67 will increase the monthly benefit, calculated by work credits, I believe.*

Completely delaying until age 70, while earning all your work credits, will increase the benefit by $24 for every $100 one would have collected at age 67 (FRA)

Taking it at 66 instead of FRA 67 will decrease a benefit by little under 7% annually, then it adjusts to a 5% decrease annually at FRA until age 70.*

Overall, the longer you can wait to start getting benefits to age 70, the larger the benefit.

*It's been a while since I looked at the rules and calculations so those figures aren't written in stone.

If I misunderstood your reply, let me know.

@paul

I think my main point was that a 3-month delay in applying for benefits would not result in an overall loss, it'd mean a higher benefit consistent with a formula. Over a lifetime, and the lifetime of a survivor, that would far exceed $5k in missed monthly payments.

Also, I thought you describing a 66 year old now. I am 66 now, and I will reach my FRA prior to turning 67 by a few months. So, if you were describing someone who's turning 66 this year, you'd be describing someone my age.

@jrredho The beneficiary would be in their mid-80's before they broke even and recovered $5000 due to any increase from delaying 3 months in this hypothetical.

@paul

That's the worst case for someone who's waited until 70 to begin drawing on their earned SS pension.

In any case, there's no permanent loss of benefits, and there's no long-term savings to be had by the SSA for the delay. If that's the rationale given by someone, that person has the analysis capacity of a flea.

@paul the #cruelty is intentional, not by accident!

@paul
It annoys me to no end that so many call #TheElongatedMuskrat a "genius" or some sort of "engineering wizard" when he's nothing more than a mogul with deep pockets.

HE DIDN'T INVENT #Tesla, HE BOUGHT IT. He didn't write the flawed self-driving software.

HE DIDN'T INVENT rocket ships (SpaceX) or micro-communications satellites (Starlink).

His "Hyperloop" idea (never built) came straight out of the movies… as did "neurolink".

He WILDLY overpaid for Twitter and drove it into the ground.

@MugsysRapSheet (I'm sorry to be this person but the Hyper loop is actually another idea he stole, this time from Robert Goddard, who suggested using capsules in airless tubes about fifty years before Leon was born.)
@Gustodon
Hyperloop is included among the ideas he stole.
@MugsysRapSheet You said it came "straight out of the movies." I just thought you'd want to know it had other origins.
@Gustodon
It also comes from pneumatic tubes for sending messages throughout office buildings (and now banks) going back more than a century.

@paul

And DOGE announced in the upcoming months...
THEY will be rewriting & updating the entire code for Social Security payment, & to expect outages as this happens... OOPS!

I am "BIG~BALLS!"

@Bssr4 That's actually the next topic in this thread unless something else breaks before I post about it. I am ingesting the news release and what others are writing about it.

@paul
Layoffs, firings, closing offices, ridiculous long phone waits,
and now:

Social Security Online Service Not Available

We're sorry, but the online service you requested isn't available right now. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Please return to the Social Security Online home page.

@paul

Would have been my first payment after paying in for 44 years!

@Bssr4 That is usually the message you get when the service is down for the day.

For whatever reason, since it was first introduced many years ago, the service goes down at night. I once was told it was so the database could be updated.

It is only operational during these hours:

Monday-Friday 4:15 a.m. - 1:00 a.m.
Saturday 5:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m.
Sunday 8:00 a.m. - 11:30 p.m.
Federal Holidays Same hours as the day the holiday occurs.
