Top Tesla investor issues brutal ultimatum to Elon Musk as stocks plunge

Ross Gerber, who owns an estimated $105 million in shares of Tesla stock, called on Elon Musk to step down as head of the company, saying that he "destroyed" the company's reputation

@johnlogic

Even if Musk steps down, he still holds a massive amount of shares. Thus he would still benefit from every car sold.
I am not buying anything where Musk could benefit even in the slightest.

@Brynawel @johnlogic

Precisely, if this guy was serious he'd be telling Musk to close down DOGE and get out of government. That's why people are protesting, and at this point it doesn't matter if Tesla changes hands because it's not solely about Musk, it's about the obscenely rich in general and their attempt to set up an oligarchy.

@contrasocial @Brynawel

Trump and Musk are not attempting to "set up" an oligarchy; Eisenhower warned of a growing military industrial complex, and the oligarchy entered full swing by shifting the tax burden from high earners first with the Revenue Act of 1964 (marking a sharp increase of the annual inflation rate to about 4%) and again under Reagan.

According to recent comments from an academic, Trump has recently turned the US away from democracy and into an "electoral autocracy":

Trump has escalated an authoritarian turn in last few days"

Possibly defying a court order. Urging his Justice Department to prosecute nemeses. Repeatedly calling the media 'illegal.' Declaring a predecessor's pardon null and void. U.S. President Donald Trump has done these things in the past few days.

@Brynawel @johnlogic recall and void all his stock options. If it’s not legal, do it anyway and tie him up in the courts. That seems to be the M.O. lately.
@johnlogic to all the centi-millionaire dudes whose net worth depends on Tesla's valuation, ... the boycotters don't care who has what title, they want you all to pay the taxes you owe the society that's been giving you this wealth, and get out of law making.
@johnlogic Tesla' disaster is solely tied to Elmo, if he steps down then the company will have much better prospects. I personally dislike the EV mantra because I know for a fact, that it doesn't work the way they claim it does half the time. Aka. money saving and environment friendly. But it does have some very niche use cases in cities. If Electric Hjesus goes away, then good riddance and better days for Tesla. But for now, they are officially nazimobiles.
@siim @johnlogic Tesla is a bullshit company and their valutation is so far blown out. There is no way Tesla can be valued at more than several established brands combined. Like, based on what metric? With that they'd have to outsell every other brand by factor of 50x. Their value is inflated with endless promises of miracles that they never deliver.
@siim @johnlogic Where is ever promised FSD that was ready and safer than human drivers in 2017? Where is Tesla Roadster? Where is Tesla Semi? Elon was showing these amazing robots that ended up being faked by remote control by human. Or that stupid bus they showcased in last event that can't clear a regular speed bump or slightly inclined driveway. Everything Tesla sells is overhyped bullshit and I'm tired of seeing drag races of Teslas because that's all they are good at. On empty airfield...
@rejzor I wouldn't get my hopes up as long as Teslas fail the coyote & roadrunner test...

@siim @johnlogic
@siim @johnlogic Continue the boycott until Tesla has to shut its doors for good.
@siim I think it's too late for that; the boycotts are about Musk, not Tesla; even if he steps down, as long as his Tesla stocks back the loans he took out, boycotts will go on...
@johnlogic

@johnlogic

Just as John Schnatter going full proto-MAGA during the Pres. Obama years forever tainted Papa John's Pizza for all moral people Muskrat has forever polluted Tesla whether or not they have anything to do with the companies

@johnlogic unfortunately, I'm not sure someone owning ~0.01% of Tesla will have a big impact there.
@johnlogic
It doesn't change anything about the symbolic fight that needs to be led against Tesla, as Musk will still own a significant part of the company, regardes his role in Tesla's board... Boycott xAI and Starlink is at least as necessary.
@johnlogic I don't know whether that actually achieves anything. Tessla is irrevocable linked to Musk in peoples mind. Anything short of Musk divesting and a rebrand, nothing will change that. But would to company survive that? I wouldn't be surprised if this is kills Tesla.
@gilgwath they're not only linked in people's minds, but also still via Elon's wallet, and this was never about Tesla to begin with
@johnlogic

@johnlogic It's the same guy they voted to give $56B to less than a year ago.

Last year there was $56B lying around the couch cushions in Tesla. And the shareholders stepped up and proclaimed "Tesla will be better off if we take that $56B out of the company, and put it in Musk's pocket."

Why the change of heart, shareholders? Didn't get a kickback from that $56B?

https://www.reuters.com/business/autos-transportation/musk-says-both-tesla-shareholder-resolutions-passing-by-wide-margins-2024-06-13/

Musk says Tesla shareholders voting yes for his $56 billion pay package

Tesla shareholders are voting to approve a $56 billion pay package for Elon Musk and to move the electric vehicle maker's legal home to Texas, the CEO said on social media on Wednesday, adding that passage was by wide margins.

Reuters
@mrkeen @johnlogic many of the shareholders didn't in fact vote to give him that money. In fact, they sued to stop it.

@jhooper @johnlogic I looked up Gerber, and sure enough he was publicly against the pay package last year, even calling the board negligent.

So perhaps no-one's changed their minds, and maybe the shareholders will decide to pledge another $56B this year to fund ketamine and Diablo 4 hacks.

@johnlogic
If I had invested $105 million in Tesla shares, then I would have been looking far more closely at the antics of the man who is running/ruining the company.
It's a bit late for the guy to only just wake up to this now.

@johnlogic i hope that this will not be enough for people.

Even if he steps down, he will still benefit from the worth of Tesla stock.

@rasmus91 @johnlogic If he steps down, the most likely scenario is that the stock price will rise for a week, and then plummet for 4 months as whomever takes over wouldn't be able to bullshit like Musk.

The stock price wasn't much linked to the performance of the company, more the image of the company promising to do impossible things.

@johnlogic

Excuse the world but the damage is done and this ASSET is forever tarnished, no coming back even if they give you a two-for-one deal on a new car, they are in their death throes...

@johnlogic How can $105 million investor be a top investor. Market cap of company is supposed to be $714 000 million ($714 billion)? That’s 0,01%.
@peterp I assume the author meant to describe this fellow is a top *individual* investor (rather than an institutional investor).

@johnlogic Realizing that there’s arguments pro and con, I do think there’s value in this. In the US idiot tycoons like Trump and Musk have seized _our_ government and have caused immense pain and done damage that will take decades to clean up. If there’s no other way to get them then tear their companies down. There’s nothing sacred about obscene wealth.

I was watching a video about Trump’s machinations in the Atlantic City casino industry. He could have been stopped decades ago.

@johnlogic I suspect that it's actually too late for that. The brand is now indelibly soiled with the association.

Mr Gerber might have been better advised to keep quiet and try to realise his $105m before the share price falls further.

@johnlogic I hope Elmo’s ego doesn’t let him do that; and that the demise of Tesla will also be the end of him and Trump.
Sadly, I fear that this will somehow turn out not to be the case for either of them. 🥺
@johnlogic Not enough... Musk has to divest himself from Tesla. Tesla has a “chance” to become a reputable company once Musk/Musk-adjacent leadership is gone & it no longer profits him…

@billvinson

Musk has damaged the Tesla brand, perhaps irreparably. He promised full-self driving capabilities in the near future and didn't deliver. Under him, he removed the ability of existing cars to use their radars.

All Tesla customers and investors should sue Musk into oblivion through a giant class action case.

@johnlogic I don't disagree. I see their only chance is to sever all connections with him (including him being a large shareholder) so they can try to right their path… I don't know if they can do it, but that's the only possibility I see.
@johnlogic i hope #musky Will stay as ceo. So beautifull to see that stock going down and down deeper and down (status quo song 🎵)
