My great uncle is part of the Silent Generation. He was a school teacher who, on that salary, was able to afford to live in a beautiful Manhattan apartment, retire at 55, and hire a private nurse at home until 97.
I make a hell of a lot more money than he did (factoring in the inflation and all that) and I struggle to save for a downpayment. 20% of a million dollars is a lot of lattes/avocados/whatever other thing those arseholes think I need to be living without. (Yes, houses cost a million dollars here. And those are the "cheaper" options.)
