Release notes for GIMP 3.0

@GIMP 😱 👏👏 Thank you! 🙏

@GIMP Just a note that you linked to what I assume is the testing site :) You probably meant https://www.gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-3.0.html

Congrats on the release!

GIMP - GIMP 3.0 Release Notes

Introduction¶ After seven years of active development, we are proud to announce the next major release of GIMP – GIMP 3.0! While the original focus was on updating to a newer GUI library, this release is packed with many new features, enhancements, and usability improvements. While we can’t cover …

@GIMP fix the name you cowards
@petrillic They’re proud of it. They think they’re bravely fighting the PC police (I tried to find a term as outdated as their software 😆). Srsly, there are so many better alternatives now--I can’t imagine why anyone still uses it.
@mjibrower @petrillic “…3.0 is released!”
Me: *checks* *name is still a slur* not interested.
@crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic so is the word gimp a problem?
Definition of GIMP

Definition of 'gimp' by Merriam-Webster

@tankgrrl @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic ah I see. I may live oversea now but English is still my second language. I actually never heard the word gimp being used in other context other than the software.
@kkavee @tankgrrl @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic yup, most people have stopped using ableist slurs, but [edit: a sizeable fraction of] the maintainers of this project take pride in it for some reason
@jackeric @kkavee @tankgrrl @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic Do they? 🤔
I would think it raised a chuckle once 26 years ago and now it's kept for historic reasons. I thought I find something on the Wikipedia-article about this controversy but there is nothing. Do you have a source please?
@jackeric @kkavee @tankgrrl @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic maybe #Wilber would be an option as this is the name of the Gimp mascot?
@jackeric @kkavee @tankgrrl @crowbriarhexe @petrillic And they have an army of sealions (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sealioning) and/or bots who follow around any mention of this topic trying to have a "debate." I do understand that those who do not live in English-dominant countries might not be familiar with the term the first time they hear about it; it can be hard to tell if someone is genuinely curious or if they're sealioning.
Sealioning - Wikipedia

@jackeric @kkavee @tankgrrl @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic Do you complain to the BSDM community about not using the word gimp?
@auser Do you sealion for other categories of bigotry, or just ableism?
@jackeric Sorry, i don't understand what you are saying. I don't speak newspeak.
@auser OK, go away until you understand, then

@kkavee

Same happened to me, but the day I learned that word is a slur, I understood that is wrong, and their unwillingness to change means I cannot use nor recommend that software

@tankgrrl @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic

@tankgrrl You know, language changes. Google "gimp" and you'll see what the first page serves you. Google invested billions in finding out what people mean when they write gimp. The result: "GNU Image Manipulator Program".

@tankgrrl @kkavee @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic so because by accident in one of hundreds of languages the same combination of letters has multiple meanings of which one is offensive, this project has to change it's name? 🤔

I recently learned that Queer is a swear word for some as well. I always thought it's just synonym to LGBTQ+. Why is everything a swear word now? Can we stop using random words for swearing, please? The GIMP software obviously has nothing to do with swearing.

@tankgrrl @kkavee @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic c'mon! It's not offensive. It stands for GNU Image Manipulation Program. 🥀🥀🥀
@crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic what's the issue with the GNU IMP?
@nicemicro @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic Also GIM without program would work. It's obvious it's a program :) no need to be in the name.
@lolgab @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic
Have you installed the GIM program?! 😂
@nicemicro @crowbriarhexe @mjibrower @petrillic I'll install GIM when I come back from the gym 😁
@mjibrower Which editor are you using? I periodically check, but I've never found an equivalent (Foss/nix) that works, always looking for something better

@ike_seblon I've heard excellent things about Krita, I need to suck it up and make the switch myself.

@mjibrower

@petrillic @GIMP thanks for pointing this out. I honestly hadn’t connected the dots until now. Gotta address the ableism
@petrillic @GIMP If you really cared about the GIMP name, you'd be doing something about it. You could fork GIMP, rename it to whatever, set up a download site and see for yourself if anyone really cares about the name. If you cant do it yourself, you could pay someone or raise funds for someone to do it. It isn't all that much work. But no. Instead, all you do is bitch. That leads me to believe that all you really want to do is bitch.
@eltomito @petrillic @GIMP The last time someone did this, the "community" harassed the fuck out of them.
@sagethesagesage @petrillic @GIMP If you mean Glimpse, they didn't just rebrand GIMP, they wanted to change the user interface and do other things which was way more complicated. And AFAIK it ended, because the project leader got a new job and couldn't work on Glimpse anymore.
@petrillic @GIMP There's a relatively easy fix: they could call it GNU IMP, meaning that the full name remains the same (GNU Image Manipulation Program) and only the offensive acronym is dropped.

@not2b @petrillic @GIMP

I just pronounce it with a soft G. Problem solved.

@petrillic @GIMP I have to agree - the name needs changing, it somehow manages to be offensive to parts of the disability community and the kink community at the same time.

@petrillic @GIMP Yeah... "GnIMP" is right there, and way better anyway, and fun to say

Edit: thanks for shaking this tree Chris, so many rats fell out and my block button is feasting :)

@GIMP Thank you to all the dev!
@GIMP put modern editing features in you cowards!
@jonathankoren @GIMP pretty sure pull requests are open
@miniBill @GIMP
FYI: “Fuck you” uses less chars, and means the same thing. HTH!

@[email protected] @[email protected] Go way dude. You're the one that showed up in my mentions to complain that someone doesn't appreciate trash. You're not king of the internet, bro. Go away. You're servile attitude isn't appreciated anywhere. What's next? "You've got the code. Patch it yourself?" That abusive talk was stupid 40 years ago.

SFBA.social

@jonathankoren Please keep it civil - thank you.

GIMP is produced by volunteers. If you want specific features, yes, please file issues. If you want to be on the design team join the design team. But without code being written by volunteers, there won’t be changes. Vague suggestions like “modern editing tools” are hard to implement.

@GIMP @jonathankoren I really think you should sell the software binaries like #Ardour does. Not less than US $100. Free updates until next major version.

Many human beings will always be ungrateful for what they are given for free without payment.

@opensourceopenmind @jonathankoren to be fair, many people are also ungrateful to things they paid for...!
@GIMP @jonathankoren Yes, but at least you'll get some funding for development out of it. Maybe even some insight into what features paid users are missing. Right now, complaining is free without much benefit - instead you have to put in time and effort to reply.
@opensourceopenmind @jonathankoren Thanks! We do have patreon links for some of the developers, and people do donate. Development direction is partly what interests the volunteers (since they are volunteers!) and partly informed by the thousands of requests and issues we get on gitlab and elsewhere.

@jonathankoren @GIMP My reply was probably unhelpful, and for that I'm sorry. I was irked by you calling the devs "cowards".

I wish you happiness and success in your life, and may your future contain conversations more productive than this one.

@jonathankoren @GIMP Develop it yourself, how hard can it be!

@GIMP Congratulations to the team for all the hard work!!

Never mind the trolls and keep going!!
