various people been saying this for a while but it cannot be overstated how much using ai art on your podcast/blog/slides/etc visually associates you with fascism https://newsocialist.org.uk/transmissions/ai-the-new-aesthetics-of-fascism/
AI: The New Aesthetics of Fascism

It's embarrassing, destructive, and looks like shit: AI-generated art is the perfect aesthetic form for the far right.

New Socialist
the italian futurism of our era
this is in part down to its propensity to serve up thomas kinkade style sentimental nostalgic slop that recalls exactly the sort of fictionalised past that fascist rhetoric is built on
@jcoglan It fits! This book from long ago - its cover has a certain something that could emerge from an AI today.
@jcoglan a key fascist point is the destruction of the arts, so it makes sense they’d love the concept of generative “art”

@cmdr_nova @jcoglan plus, most artists despise them and wouldn't want to work with them anyway.

So they made an art stealing machine that produces slop that's good enough for the fash taste (that is, it's crap).

@jcoglan or will very soon.
@jcoglan i think that's in the eye of the beholder... When I see a PhD student do a presentation about sleeping habits of mice or whatever and they have an ai generated image of a sleeping computer mouse, I think accusing them of sympathizing with fascism is a bit much...
@miturian @jcoglan When I see someone use AI in a context like that I don't immediately assume they're a fascist either, but I do think of them as dangerously uncritical of a technology that disproportionately benefits fascists to an extreme degree. It's also short-sighted for a researcher to promote use of plagiarism machines like that. I wonder how those PhD. students would feel seeing their research results attributed to ChatGPT?
@jcoglan Erm... wutt?

@diaeter You see, (current) genAI is about replicating the æsthetics of art that has already been done, without giving any thought to its broader social context, and fascism is about exactly the same thing. There's not necessarily a link between AI techniques as such and fascism; it's just that fascism is the fruit of a special kind of stupidity, and the current bleeding edge of genAI research resembles a lot that very same kind of stupidity.

@jcoglan

@riley It pretty much resembles reproduction of average and mostly mediocrity,as all fascists are mediocre to the max and think that's superior.
@diaeter But six fingers is not the average, or the mediocre.
@riley No, whatever went wrong there in the ai algorithms seems fixed now. I wih fascists could be fixed that easily(by learning history or empathy e.g.)
@jcoglan Calling AI art "mechanically produced" shows a frightening lack of undertsanding...
@jcoglan It's the new aesthetics, fascists use...

@jcoglan

Some very interesting points.

@jcoglan This was such a an excellent read, thank you for posting this. I'm already sending this everywhere.
