I need someone to explain to me why it’s always “if you can’t pay rent, buy fewer lattes and avocado toasts” and not “if you can’t pay your employees a living wage, buy fewer yachts, rockets and presidents”.

Explain it to me like I’m in kindergarten.

@Strandjunker

it's just fundamental #moronomics

lol

we are all #fungible to them

@Strandjunker

“Hey, Twinky, want to see if there's an afterlife?”

—Moe threatening Calvin

@Strandjunker Because then you can make the middle and lower classes fight amongst themselves and forget the super-rich continue to profit the whole time!
@Strandjunker They are caught in milieu in which self-worth is measured by net worth and everybody knows what you are worth. Having more than someone means you are *better* than that person but, no matter where you go, you end up meeting people who have more than you. So what else can you do other than try to get more so you can better than them? It's a never-ending competition that makes them stupid and mean ...

@Strandjunker

Extending this valid logic.

I do not care about inflation level if my wage raises outpace it....

Inflation /price increases are to protect corporate profits. Who protects wages???

@Strandjunker My dad told me when I didn't go to college after HS-you pay 25% of your pay for rent(to him)-Not unfair. I moved out. Lived in apartments. No Cable. (This 1982) Ate IN-peas and noodles and pasta-too young to get at, tho. I had a 1964 olds. I Sacrificed for The Good Life. I invested my savings in mutual funds(low risk) Made 2x+ what banks pay. I've never done Starbucks or avocado toasts(but-avocado dips!!!) Save your money. Sacrifice. When you're old you'll thank young you.

@patcanfield @Strandjunker 1982 was 40+ years ago. Even my Boomer parents acknowledge that I couldn’t do a lot of the things they were able to do at that time because the cost of living is much higher. And interest rates are much lower!

What’s your excuse?

@MisuseCase I'm closer to your parent's age. I thought I gave sound advice. My excuse for What ? Every minute of your life is Your points on the time-line --and THAT time line is YOURS. The Relic(quary?) of your existence archeologists seeking evidence of your benefit to humanity will amaze them How?
@Strandjunker Because the media is caping for those who can, but don't want to, pay their employees a living wage.
@Strandjunker It's easier to pick on people who can't fight back (as easily).
@Strandjunker Well, you build your whole society on a system based on the mass exploitation of resources and other people, then it turns the people in a position to succeed in these endeavors into sociopaths (or perhaps some of them were all along) who start believing that the world would go to hell in a handbasket without them. They've earned their yachts, and they need these presidents in their pockets to keep the world turning for you, small person. That's why you need to buy less coffee.
@Strandjunker
Because the have employees who believe that they know everything, while in fact they don't even know what " a living wage" is.
@Strandjunker The people who blithered on about lattes and avocados came from an era where a family could expect to own a house on the wage of one earner working a low skill job. They believed if hard work had worked for them, the only reason it wasn't working for their children was that they were lazy and wasteful. They ignored the reality that wages became stagnant while property prices exploded. They fixated on daily expenditure, which was embodied by seemingly expensive food and drink.
@Strandjunker Because when you grow up with everything handed to you, as all billionaires have, you have no sense of accountability to others. Those of us born to regular means understand the value of hard work and have learned lessons about how to treat others and building community.
@Strandjunker
I think it’s about who controls the message really 👍
I’ve never understood why “the economeee” has to grow continuously 🤷‍♂️ Makes no sense to me. But I’m just a semi-retired engineer who went to a northern comprehensive state school.
The universe or at least the planet being finite for one thing. Endless expansion is impossible 🙅
There are people who are actually are experts in economics who say that continuous growth is not necessary. Not easy to find though.
@Strandjunker Because you kick those below both verbally and financially
