Lomaxcat@georgetakei Was AZT perfect? No. In the early days of AIDS, there was a huge need for treatment to stop the endless numbers of largely young men dying from this newly discovered illness. Fast-tracking it was not wrong in my view. It was a terrible time, and many forget just how devastating that diagnosis was decades ago.
Dan Himes @Lomaxcat @georgetakei This is exactly correct. My wife worked at NIH at the time (not in this area though) and it was so heartbreaking and devastating. I still remember the first time seeing the quilt. And tbh I didn't know that many from the afflicted community. But knowing a few was enough to understand how desperate we were to find something, anything, to offer hope and maybe buy time until something more useful came along.
It's not unlike where we are now with Alzheimer's, now that I think about it.

Nancy Green@georgetakei I worked in clinical trials of HIV meds. 1996 was the year they got effective anti-viral meds. Until then, there were many false starts and trials that didn’t work out. Now we should be saving our indignation for a president who signed off on stopping lifesaving HIV meds for poor people around the world.
