Periodic reminder that DIY HRT exists! It's exactly what it sounds like - buying and taking the medication on your own, without a doctor's prescription. This can be a lifeline to anyone blocked from standard routes to HRT, and is legal in most jurisdictions! [1,2]

"Official" HRT is generally safer and preferred if you have access, but there is absolutely
nothing wrong with using DIY options when you need. Whether that's an inability to access the best medications, a doctor who won't prescribe a proper dose, or even a complete ban on gender-affirming care - DIY HRT is morally and legally acceptable.

1. Most jurisdictions draw a distinction between
buying and selling prescription medications. It's usually illegal to sell a medication to someone without a prescription, but it's not illegal to buy one. Many online sellers are happy to exploit this loophole and sell medication out of regions with weak or unenforced regulation.
2. An unfortunate exception is testosterone, which is a controlled substance and therefore illegal to buy in the United States. Many common DIY resources don't provide instructions to obtain it, but such sources do exist.

As a personal suggestion, I recommend against ordering injection supplies from Amazon if you can avoid it. I've had good success ordering from Med-Vet International, who stock almost everything you could need and offer bulk rates to individual buyers. One thing to note (that they don't mention on their website AFAICT) is that your shipping address and billing address must match exactly. Otherwise they will cancel your order and ask you to re-submit with different payment info.

@hazelnoot
@hazelnoot

well it is legal in transfem people.
In many places diy transmasc hormones are illegal due to their use in doping.

@drawnto @hazelnoot yeah, I put a note about that at the bottom. It's kinda bullshit that T is controlled at all, since it's not like abusers ever have trouble getting it. If the restrictions were so effective, then we wouldn't have so many sports requiring regular blood tests.
@hazelnoot
and taking antiandrogens without androgens is kinda a bad idea due to bone issues.
@hazelnoot

antiandrogens without androgens@drawnto is one of these meant to be "estrogens" or "antiestrogens"? I'm not sure why you would take antiandrogens and androgens at the same time πŸ˜…

@drawnto @hazelnoot yeah, that gatekeeping sucks. there's no legitimate reason to restrict access to testosterone

@hazelnoot @hazelnoot @drawnto On the other hand, this does mean trans men can get T the same places the athletes do. Somewhere in any community will be an athlete. That athlete will know other athletes, some of whom are dopers. There's your T connection right there.

Next is the fact that a trans man who is NOT an athlete and refuses any employment that demand drug tests is much less likely to show up on official radar that say, the winner of a high profile bike race testing positive for steroids and EPO.

@hazelnoot now if only crypto exchanges didn't suck ass
@wyatt8740 @hazelnoot they are a massive pain in the ass but it's not the hardest thing in the world to find a nokyc exchange and use it (obligatory "i am not defending cryptocurrency but it is the only way for most diy resources unfortunately")
@tauon @hazelnoot i would like to be able to use it to purchase hrt as well, you don't have to disclaim it :\
@wyatt8740 @hazelnoot i'm confused by this response. don't most people think "crypto is bad but at least it's not 'real money'"?
@tauon @hazelnoot my response is "I want to find an exchange where i can purchase crypto without the exchange taking a ridiculously large handling fee"
and also that i don't think you needed to defend wanting to get crypto, there is a use case for it
@tauon @hazelnoot if that wasn't clear enough i'm just saying i don't think the 'i am not defending cryptocurrency but it is the only way for most diy resources unfortunately' line was strictly necessary if that was said to head off any potential prickliness from me
@wyatt8740 @hazelnoot eh it wasn't that i just notice a lot of people (not saying you would) usually say "but crypto is bad!!" (and for good reason) and i wanted to make it clear i'm not a cryptobro (cryptosis?) but it's the only way (for example, gnu taler isn't used anywhere (would that even work for this purpose?))
@tauon yeah i don't feel that way about cryptocurrency funnily enough
in theory it's fine, i even wanted to get into mining it in 2010-2011 or so after I first read about it but didn't have an even minimally acceptable GPU back then (intel integrated graphics circa 2009).
Cryptobros destroying the planet came later and that drove me away from it but i still think the basic idea of a non-government decentralised currency is a nice one
@tauon also the other part is the fees the exchanges put on you, and trying to find one that feels somewhat reasonable
@hazelnoot are there any ways i can check what the "most jurisdictions" are?
@kat_cal2 I'm not aware of any map or index, so you'll may just have to google it unfortunately.
@hazelnoot idk how you can say "generally legal" when you mean "for about half of us"
Still gonna boost to spread the links but I'm pretty tired of being a footnote
@raphaelmorgan I'm sorry, I didn't mean to sideline transmasc people with this
@hazelnoot I figured you probably didn't mean to. Thanks for being understanding abt it

@hazelnoot
Β«Few sources are willing to sell or even provide information about testosterone, for fear of criminal prosecution.Β»

Hi ! Just FYI, this is totally untrue ! There are lots of T and androgen sources, way way more than there are E sources. However they're not trans specific, and mostly aimed at bodybuilder/AAS user. It's not a big deal - testosterone is testosterone (except that T gel tend to be hard to source)
Check out eroid : https://www.eroids.com/

@hazelnoot Also it being illegal to buy in many countries does not mean it's criminalized. In most case it's fine and a relatively chill thing to do (of course, risk evaluation is personal and highly dependant on various factors including where you live).
An important annoying thing would be that it's harder to talk about sources publicly on the internet, that's true and sucks. But on the other hand, T supply is more reliable/resilient, between other thing. Just very different markets :)
@hazelnoot Maybe a weird thought. But maybe it is a wise idea to make these sites also available trough a TOR hidden service. Just in case
@venthewolf @hazelnoot Saw this and took it upon myself, all available via mirrorwzknlde3b4wdt3yskz4joaewt56cj7trckhqhtnkbygzw7fdqd.onion
@hazelnoot sadly the netherlands makes importing medication a crime (big economic one) even for personal use, unless carried over the border in person
@hazelnoot DIY hrt really is an amazing solution in case informed consent is not an option.
@hazelnoot yes this quite literally saved my life when I first started
