Microsoft Quietly Launches an Ad-Supported Version of Office Apps for Windows. This version launched after every Microsoft 365 personal and family subscription received Copilot AI features, along with a price increase of at least 30%. They are still chasing money, having seen how Meta and Google are making money using ads. There is no cure for greed, even if one has 73% desktop market share.

Microsoft quietly launches free, ad-supported version of Office apps for Windows with limited functionality

Office for Windows is getting a free, ad-supported tier that lets you create and edit documents, but has limited features and only lets you save to OneDrive.

@nixCraft Microsoft's AI nonsense/price hike was my final straw.

Canceled all MS services last month, switched from Windows to Linux on the last of my machines, and I'm helping other friends and family members make the switch, too.

In my experience, so called "average people" are eager to move away from MS, they're just looking for some of us folks to offer their time, and help them move to alternatives.

@nixCraft Only lets you save to OneDrive. Hmm, could only mean one thing, they want the content to train that AI....
@nixCraft Another day of Microsoft being Microsoft...
@nixCraft why wouldn’t you just use LibreOffice?

@nixCraft
when i saw the screenshot with the ad on the side, it reminded me of this

only difference i see is that they increased the size of the ad. Other than that, it's still microsoft advertising its own products

honestly, having a free ad-supported version is not as bad as it sounds, as there are a lot of people who need to resort to piracy because of it being too expensive. I'm sure many would rather see an ad than see malware (assuming switching is not a viable solution for some)

@hi_im_sorro @nixCraft I think to many of us old folks (especially in Linux community), the idea that your os -itself- would hit you with advertising is abominable.

@markopolo141 @nixCraft i can understand that, and i personally hate ads too. This isn't gonna make me switch back to MS Office, but I remember in primary and secondary school that we were asked to use MS Word, and most of us weren't aware there were alternatives. So mostly in those cases I can see way better to have a limited with ads version that can do what we need as opposed to trying to or asking someone to pirate it

It's not like the paid version doesn't sell your data and train AI anyway

@nixCraft
Those greedy firms have to collapse and disappear.
And even free, their products are still crap.
