John Oliver's Last Week Tonight mentions #Mastodon and #PixelFed as alternatives that are "not as desperate to fall in line with trump".
@shlee Does John Oliver have an account on understating.social?

@shlee

#JohnOliver has to help, right? Or #StayUpLate ? Haha

@chroma0
Let us post #JohnOliver being sexy pics. I heard it worked somewhere for something ^_^J

Let me start.

@shlee

@dzwiedziu @chroma0 @shlee I used to lust after him when I was younger :<
@shlee Bluesky is in the list :-(

@beaufils yes, and it's not as desperate to fall in line with trump.

Even tho i also know it's not as good of a solution as the fediverse.

@beaufils @shlee You can like it or not, but the crowd is distinctly not Nazi.

@Secret_Squirrel @shlee

Maybe not yet but it will surely come very fast.

The main trouble with BlueSky IMHO is that it is owned by a company, a US company and at the end (despite what they state) is very centralised.

I fear that same causes will produce same consequences.

@beaufils @shlee It could, but I'm but going to presuppose anything. It's not problematic right now that I can see. The vibe here is very different (to me, at least), so I get why people have a preference and I'm not going to rag on either platform.
@beaufils @shlee Gotta start people with something they're comfortable with, even it has about 5-10 year life span

@Mimesatwork @shlee

Even if the tool/company itself has the same flaws as the one which may be replaced?

I strongly disagree.

@shlee If Musk gets his Mastodon hub up, it will be fun. I think it will be good for network quality and the marxists will finally lock everyone out. 😂
@matroskin @shlee truth.social 2.0 *fediblocking noises*
@shlee
It's a good start. But it would be better if he was present here too.
@derderwish @shlee He’s on Bluesky if you want to follow him somewhere.
@shlee in all fairness to #johnoliver I followed him on X when I was there, he never posts
@shlee twitter, fb, instagram already deleted. Unfortunately, its much harder to get rid of WhatsApp since everyone use it.
@alvyntc @shlee funny enough, I find Signal to be stricly better than WhatsApp in every aspect (especially UX)
Compared to alternatives to twitter or instagram where no strictly better alternatives exists
@blueluma @alvyntc @shlee except in one: WhatsApp has better accessibility for vision impairment

@alvyntc @shlee my friends and family circle agreed to move to Signal from WhatsApp, back at the end of January. A few friends that couldn't, they agreed SMS was fine to go back to. Many of us, including myself, have since deleted our WhatsApp accounts.

My family is migrating our Google photos to https://Ente.io. A few friends have expressed interest in doing that too. Ente can also be self-Hosted.

Together, we all make a impact. We made them big. We can make them small again.

@shlee the graphics team could have put that in
@Kyuseishun @shlee They did, it’s not in the image here.

@shlee

Yea, @Gargron and @dansup , yeaah!! ✊🏻🥳🥳

(Sry Masto Team for not tagging you all, don’t have all handles at hand right now 🙈)

@shlee
Okay, he could have dedicated a bit more airtime to those alternatives and also drop Bluesky from that list 😅.

And especially stress that those Alternatives (not Bluesky ofc) are completely different BY DESIGN.
It’s like comparing autocracy with democracy.

That hasn‘t sunk in yet with large parts of the mainstream and would have very much been worth mentioning imho 😅

@EloPup @shlee Yeah they're really a different beast. The fediverse as a whole could not "fall in line". Even if some large instances did come under pressure and cave, there would still be smaller instances holding out, and I would hope that we would scatter like seeds on the wind and make the network even more resilient.
@EloPup @shlee Why would he drop the most decentralized protocol from the list? Bluesky actually decentralizes power, while Mastodon centralizes it in the hands of server admins.

@shlee

"Not as desperate to fall in line with trump..."

High Praise?

@shlee keep the Maggots out of this platform. 🙂
@shlee I wish he would have gone into slightly more detail but it’s still more than I’ve heard from anyone else when social media comes up as a topic.
@shlee
It seems that John Oliver has not really understood what is the #Fediverse

@shlee

"…that don't not.…"?

What?

@shlee
Where is the mastodon account of John Oliver or Last Week Tonight?
@shlee Around minute 15 (or 25 on the 29-minute version I saw). Brief. Also talks - very briefly - about the lock-in effect, at the same point.

He did not spend much time on discussing the alternatives. And I think that's understandable given how large a topic that is in itself.

The main topic he is discussing is content moderation, which I am guessing might also be a challenge in Fediverse.

One major point I think he missed is websites which not just lets user post content but also actively promotes some of the content. On Fediverse I only see the content posted or shared by people I follow. But on sites such as Facebook I am constantly shown content I never opted in to.

I think that promotion of content gives Facebook a much larger responsibility for the content than they otherwise would have.

@shlee

Bluesky are scum.
Say that any time they are mentioned and push back when they are included in lists like this.

They are a venture funded front run by a billionaire with links to Steve Bannon. They are pretending to be an alternative but are just the next more of the same waiting their turn before enshitifying as they must due to their promise to investors.

Read this and fight that they are not a legitimate alternative.

1/IMPORTANT thread about Bluesky funding and origins. Many folks know that it was seeded by Jack Dorsey around a libertarian vision of a magical network that wouldn’t need moderation because it would be decentralized and baked into a protocol (somehow). The people who aided Dorsey in pursuing this vision were other libertarian/post-rationalists connected with effective altruism and other online anarchist movements.

@shlee I'd not be surprised when he joined BlueSky... Americans love their bad remakes ;) Hope the British part of his soul wins.
@shlee As a casual TV-watching user, I would have had a hard time reading "mastodon": I would have read "astodon."
The logo has little contrast and the lines of the m and logo blend significantly with each other.
If I compare it to the other lettering it is the least readable.
