Concerned about Microsoft Windows 11 Recall? You should be.

Recall allows Microsoft’s Windows 11 Copilot+ devices to screenshot every action a person takes on their PC.

What can you do? Switching to Linux is the clear answer, but some don't know what distro to try.

DistroSea.com is a website that lets you run and test 60+ Linux distributions straight from your web browser.

@AwattoAnalog For others, it's not about which distribution to try. It's about which is accessible with Orca. This screen reader is not installed on all, and even when it is, it's not always set up to either start during installation or to be started with a hotkey. If someone sighted is required to install or start a screen reader, a system is not accessible. And many programs don't work as smoothly with Orca as they do on Windows and NVDA or even Narrator either. As for this web browser experience, it sounds wonderful, but again, is it accessible/ Many simulators, etc. aren't.
@AwattoAnalog I just went to the page and chose Debian Mate, which I know, as a fact, does work with Orca. I couldn't get it started with the hotkey, nor did it start upon launching the system.

@AwattoAnalog

The most shocking part of this is that we've entered such a dystopian era where, even on my Linux system, I hesitate to send messages - knowing that most people are freely running Recall.

@illumniscate

Everyone now has to think about how you're going to talk with people about sensitive information, and if that person can be trusted if they run Windows.

@AwattoAnalog @illumniscate I'll need information regarding this. :-(

@meylodie @illumniscate

“an easy way to access information about your PC's activity snapshots...” is how this is branded.

However, it will be used to capture screenshots of emails or messages you may have deleted, as well as messages that disappear on platforms like Signal. Banking information, passwords, and medical records put on the screen will be recorded.

The feature that stores data in a database is done in plain text, attackers can use malware to extract the database and its contents.

@AwattoAnalog @illumniscate Basically all my personal files are personal, and not prone to be store by Microsoft.
I have been using GNU/Linux everyday for the paste 21 years, and won't admit my information, thoughts and every byte relating to me or my family will fall into MS's servers (or else GAFAM). However, I understand that all Windows users will let that happen for me, be I aware or not, wether I agree or not. This is outrageous.
@AwattoAnalog til freebsd is a linux distro

@AwattoAnalog Testing distros via a web portal seems like a poor way of getting to evaluate a distro, especially for newbies, who will be mostly evaluating whichever DE they try out.

Cool util either way though

I think Microsoft Windows 11 Recall sounds like a bad thing. But I would approve of a Microsoft Windows 11 recall.
@AwattoAnalog Isn't that exactly what recall was intended for? So someone would never lose a detail? I don't know what your desktop looks like, but if it's anything like mine being able to use a vocal search to find some half remembered reference or what I did with the document or program or webpage or downloaded picture is pretty fucking useful, especially as I grow older.

@AwattoAnalog and I quote "Recall is an opt-in feature, meaning users must enable it for it to start capturing screenshots. Users can delete snapshots, pause, or turn off the feature at any time."

I'm not someone who buys into microsofts bullshit, but in this case you're deliberately misrepresenting somethings intended function & missing the point or market it's intended for entirely.

Retrace your steps with Recall - Microsoft Support

@Beggarmidas

Microsoft was the first company to participate in the PRISM surveillance program. Anyone in a FVEY country who believes your information is safe with corporations like Microsoft is naive - at best; at worst, subscribes to the logic fallacy of "If you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to fear."

I'm swamped with over 340+ engagements on this topic with people favouring and boosting this message. Only one lone person, you, are the single voice in dissenting opinion.

@AwattoAnalog I'm familiar with it. Hell, I remember the original LoD & Erik Bloodaxe back in the OG day. But that & five bucks might buy me a cup of coffee. If PRISM was a surprise I wonder why you'd have thought differently. Governments, especially the US Gov have been MS's best customer since win 95. The domestic FISA wiretaps made under 701b & 702a must be disclosed after they're turned down or no more than one year later if granted. New to the game, eh? https://www.uscourts.gov/data-news/reports/statistical-reports/wiretap-reports/faqs-wiretap-reports

@AwattoAnalog They say it's stored encrypted. You have proof to the contrary?
@AwattoAnalog That’s pretty neat! I’ll try out that site.
@AwattoAnalog I need a distro that I can run adobe apps.
@AwattoAnalog Can any run legacy Microsoft apps, particularly Russian ones.
@AwattoAnalog I'm running manjaro and am pretty happy with it but others will like other flavors. What desktop to use was the more difficult choice for me. Currently back to xfce after trying i3 for a while. But being able to see and try is important I think.
@AwattoAnalog this is actually exactly why I got Linux

@AwattoAnalog

I’m a long-time Linux user and I’m all for introducing Windows escapees to an alternative, but this seems the wrong way to go about it.

Part of the problem is being overwhelmed by choice with no obvious reason to choose one distro over another. You’re suggesting a site which shows a “sea” of choices (literally in the URL) and leaves it to them to try them.

No is going to do that; they’ll just walk away with their suspicions confirmed.

@AwattoAnalog Or you could just turn Recall off. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@m1rk0

Microsoft had it enabled by default. They can let time pass, let people forget, and slowly via a series of updates, turn it back on by default when an update is installed. Then, remove the option to turn it off entirely.

Microsoft has done this with its software before. It gives the user the illusion of choice, before eventually removing that choice.

They've already signalled their intent with this spyware. They only paused because it generated significant media attention.

@AwattoAnalog Glad I switched to Linux years ago
@AwattoAnalog rather than recommending niche distros, let's try to keep people to the mains as much as possible.. Fedora, Debian, Arch.. Ubuntu or Mint (maybe). This way any bad experience by some random 6,000th respin of something that doesn't work for someone doesn't put them off completely.
@AwattoAnalog i like antix, but it's best suited for PCs with limited resources. I run surprisingly well on core 2 duo with gt 8400

@AwattoAnalog this is a nice tool. However, I doubt this really helps a beginner to decide.

Probably the main decision criteria for the average beginner is look and feel. So the main choice is the desktop environment. Distro hopping for this reason is a thing. However, on most distros you can switch to what ever desktop environment you prefer without the need to reinstall the whole computer.

The next thing is availability of (up to date) software. Missing or out of date software is something you will only notice over time.

I have yet to discover a beginner friendly, none overwhelming, resource aiding on choosing a distro. All the ones I know, I can not suggest without also providing some guidance.

@AwattoAnalog What distro would you recommend for my 8yo and 10yo who mainly use their computers to play Wobbly Life and BeamNg Drive?
@AwattoAnalog ah damn, bazzite and nobara aren't on there 🙃 those happen to be two distros I've been meaning to check out
@AwattoAnalog Great resource. Thank you!
