My thoughts are that I learned long ago to listen to other people's thoughts about questions like this while I keep my own mouth shut.
You should not have to *be* <__> in order to *play* <__>; it's called "acting" for a reason.
At the same time, if you're *not* <__> and you're called upon to play (or write, or direct) an <__> part, meaning you can't rely on your *own* experience of being <__> to be sure you're doing it right, then you've got work to do.
If you're not willing to do the work, or you don't care about getting it right, then expect backlash. Or,
if you're working (or considering working) for someone who doesn't care about getting it right (and may even be actively trying to get it wrong), then you have A Problem. Sometimes the only right solution is to walk away.
BC was in one of these situations; I'm guessing the latter, but I don't know
As an enby myself, I really like him taking responsibility for himself and saying he messed up taking the role and didn't realise how hurtful it would be. That he wouldn't do it now and that there were better people to cast and better representation to be had. I respect a person who can say "I fucked up and if I could do it over again, I wouldn't".
