This morning a customer told me that the new Samsung Galaxy S25 (and probably also the previous ones – but I hadn't noticed this on my S24) run, by default, a background service called "Meta Services," which belongs to Meta. And it runs even if you don't have any Meta apps, as it's the result of an agreement between the two companies. I don't have any information about this – does anyone know more?

#Samsung #Android #Privacy

@stefano on an s23, can confirm that the service exists. I can see that notifications are blocked, but I haven't disabled it. Fixing that now
@ni_nad @stefano I can't find it on my S22, but it might be that I don't know where exactly I should look for it. Still..
Unnecessary meta app

Hello Samsung  Please let know why these apps are in device even when we don't have Facebook messanger app and even Uninstalled pre-installed Facebook app Why we don't have rights to Uninstall these as these r not system apps  Even in secure folder these r running in background  Samsung ui don't...

@stefano Meta Services as well as Facebook (and an updater if I remember correctly) have been pre installed on Samsung devices for a long time. I have disabled all of them on my phone after setting it up 2 years ago.
I think the "Meta Services" app is to bypass android battery optimizations that could affect push message delivery as it is installed as a system app.
@stefano But uninstalling it doesn't mean that push messages won't work anymore, because android only automatically restricts background usage if the app isn't actively used.
@stefano I don't see it in S21, but that doesn't mean it's not there...

@stefano I ocnfirm on S20+ too.

It appeared a couple of months ago, noticed it because it was constantly re-activating Facebook app, depsite my actions to deactivate it.

@stefano I would like to know about this also?

@stefano my S24 had Meta app manager pre installed. Not meta services. No notifications, data sent, or permissions allowed. The "set as default" lists the urls of meta apps. I was able to delete it after checking.

There have been no Meta apps installed on this phone.

@stefano originally it was there to support Gear VR, for which Oculus (Meta) provided the runtime. Once they sunset Gear VR, it just stuck around for reasons…
@stefano I've got a 2018 Samsung model, those services aren't present there.
@stefano I just checked my S20 Ultra (Android 13), and it doesn't seem to be on there.
I did disable the Facebook app, so maybe that controls it?
These deals between companies that exploit their customers piss me right off. I discovered my phone provider does the same: https://lowkey.party/nigel/facebook-again
Facebook again

Why do I do this to myself. Oh I know, because deleting my personal FB/Instagram account DID NOT DELETE MY PHOTOGRAPHY PAGE WHICH IS NOW ...

@stefano I don't think it's only Samsung, it could be a deal with Google/Android, because in my tcl phone I also see three #meta services preinstalled
com.facebook.system
com.facebook.appmanager
com.facebook.services
I could remove those with Canta
What is Meta Services App on Android – Is it Safe

One application that has gained prominence is the Meta Services App. This application, which comes pre-installed on certain Android devices, is a product of Meta, the umbrella organization that owns Facebook and Instagram. What is the Meta Services App The Meta Services App isn’t your run-of-the-mill application. It’s a sophisticated file manager and synchronization tool […]

@stefano As I understand it, it's been in many phones and usually comes with the Facebook app.

If It's also trying to commonize functionality with Whatsapp, there's an explanation.

@stefano I just stumbled on those yesterday by accident on my S21 and they were definitely not there in the beginning.
@stefano Motorola (g200 with Android 12) here, for me those pieces of shi -ehhh- software are still called "Facebook Services/App Installer/App Manager".
Thanks for pointing these out, I've now disabled them.
@stefano It's not present on my S12SE. I saw someone with an S20+ who did have it, maybe it depends on the market? I'm in .nl for that matter.
@stefano I don't see that on mine (UK), I did have to uninstall a preinstalled Facebook app though
