In line of trying to cut as much ties as possible with big American tech, what alternatives do you suggest to Gmail+GDrive that are safe? I just recently paid, for the first time, Google One to have a backup of my phone's pics via Google Photos. I'm looking for a safer alternative... #Hivemind #Fediverse #FediTips #OpenSource #FediHelp
@diraquel I recommend PCloud for storage and Tuta for the email service.
@diraquel I use Protonmail and Proton Drive. They're a Swiss company, open source, encrypted everything. Not unreasonably priced, either.
@lmgenealogy thank you. I knew of Proton mail, but have been reading some dodgy stuff about the company here 😏
@diraquel Really? Where?
@lmgenealogy there was a post here on Mastodon. It was something about the owners. I'll have to search for it again
@diraquel All I could find on line was a warning that Protonmail, along with numerous other platforms, is being targeted by phishing attacks - which I'm glad I read, since I think the more often we're reminded of this kind of thing, the better. But same defence as usual - don't click on link in emails, make sure the url is right, etc. I try to always leave the email and go to the proper website (whether Proton or anyone else), but it would be easy to get careless, so it's good to be reminded.
@lmgenealogy the problem is this one. The owner praised Trump, although now it's backtracking

Proton Mail Says It’s “Politically Neutral” While Praising Republican Party

The “privacy-first” company surprised its user base when CEO Andy Yen lauded Trump on social media.

The Intercept
@diraquel It wasn't the owner. It was an employee of a US subsidiary.
@diraquel @lmgenealogy Most complaints I’ve ever seen about Proton are in relation to them working with law enforcement agencies when they’re required (and even then it’s limited since their email bodies are encrypted). Overall, they’re a great company and make great products
@danwalsh @lmgenealogy yeah, but the owner praising Trump is a big no no for me. Plus, we need to have in mind that the advertised privacy only works within proton (as with other similar services). Once an email is sent to another address, it's no longer private or encrypted. 😉

@diraquel @danwalsh @lmgenealogy IMHO, I think the whole “Trump praising” thing was taken out of context and over exaggerated to a large degree. I wouldn’t disregard what is otherwise an awesome company pushing privacy-respecting products to the masses because of an out-of-context personal tweet from a single individual. His intentions were positive even if poorly worded.

With that said, if you’re going to completely write off Proton then Tuta is an awesome alternative.

@danwalsh @diraquel We should always have alternatives, because you never know what will happen with any platform in future.

@lmgenealogy @danwalsh @diraquel Absolutely, I completely agree!

It’s also good to use self-hosting as an alternative, when possible.

It’s a bit tricky with email which is why I mainly use Proton Mail but for other things I don’t rely on any cloud service. For photo backup, as an example, I use Immich hosted on my own server.

@danwalsh @diraquel Yeah, I need to move myself from someone who's pretty good at understanding what other people have built to someone who knows how to build for herself.
@danwalsh @lmgenealogy self hosting for cloud backups is too much for my level of knowledge 😕
@diraquel @danwalsh I always thought the same. And I'm certainly no computer whiz. But over time I've acquired more knowledge, just reading and talking to people, so I'm a bit more willing to try things. Doesn't mean I won't mess it up!
@danwalsh @diraquel I keep an eye on what various websites say about different web services. Proton always gets good reviews.
@diraquel There's also the option of Nextcloud and StartMail.

@diraquel I recommend Tuta or infomaniak.

Proton is also in the same line but a message favourable to the new American investiture was made on one of the official channels of the American subsidiary.

Apologies, after deletion, were published indicating an individual error and a desire to avoid political subjects in the future.

It's good to know that.

@JBrickelt963 thank you. Maybe that's what I had read here @lmgenealogy
@diraquel @JBrickelt963 I don't see the post you're responding to. I'll look it up.
@lmgenealogy @JBrickelt963 it mentioned the support of proton to Trump
@diraquel @JBrickelt963 Okay, I found it. It wasn't an official statement, and it wasn't actually in support of Trump. Someone was saying the Democrats have been useless against some of the tech issues that need to be tackled and he hoped the Republicans would be better. They won't be, but that was his delusional hope.https://theintercept.com/2025/01/28/proton-mail-andy-yen-trump-republicans/

@lmgenealogy @diraquel Yes, that's right, an employee of the US subsidiary has published a statement on the official channel independently of the company itself.
@lmgenealogy Normally, by clicking on the link of the publication, you can open the original page of this one to consult all the answers.
@JBrickelt963 There was no link - it was a reply to JBrickell, and that was the only clickable thing in the post.

@lmgenealogy I don't know how you see it from your end, but in theory if you click on the publication or the date (example Feb 02) you should see the replies if there are any.

Replies from other servers could be missing but visible via "Show more replies on [initial instance of the post]".

And it goes through URLs so clickable len.

@JBrickelt963 @amassaro Tuta is looking good. I had seen it before on the European Alternatives website someone helpful shared here
European Alternatives

We help you find European alternatives for digital service and products, like cloud services and SaaS products.

European Alternatives
@Jonathan13 I have! That was my starting point. But I am not tech savvy enough to choose. Hence the recommendations request ☺️

@diraquel I use Proton. Though with the recent issues I’m debating that.
