It's all gone. They've taken down all the CDC datasets from https://data.cdc.gov/

"Do not fear those who tell the truth. Fear those who try to hide it. They are willing to sacrifice other things."

EDIT at 18.43 CET - the website seems to be BACK UP - looks like for about an hour, from my notifications.
It was done when I posted the original. I wouldn't have posted if it was not.

What may be removed to become 'in compliance', I do not know.

God Bless the Data Hoarders!
@Lydie @firefoxx66 I hope that this isn’t the only place where those contents and datasets are stored. I mean: Github is a wholly owned subsidiary of Microsoft. I don’t think that there are many working copies of the full repository, and I don’t think Microsoft will put up much of a fight if it is put under pressure to kill this project. Using breach of copyright as a pretext, for instance.

@firefoxx66 anyone able and.willing to extract said data on the ground?

  • Consider getting in touch with someone of their IT departmebt and have them load up some LTO-9 tapes in the off-hours...

@firefoxx66

Censorship and a criminal offense.

@firefoxx66 I hope it's all been archived by people... *sigh*

@firefoxx66 National Archives- Here come the Bastards!!!!

@firefoxx66 The good folks at DataHoarders (sub reddit) have been archiving many GOV websites over the last few weeks.

It's a real shame that it takes an army of regular people to retain important data that all of us paid into, instead of the government keeping it on the records.

This is why Open Data matters. Relying on any one data steward - governmental or otherwise - creates a SPoF that invites attack from people whose interests or ideologies are threatened by that data.

Universities and other scientific institutions could use BitTorrent to maintain synced copies of datasets, and distribute them freely.

@firefoxx66

Just in case you wanted more info...

The full CDC dataset, available on as a torrent. If you have the resources to download, host, and mirror the the assets, please do!

@firefoxx66 Sh*t. I have stuff on OneDrive. Some years ago code changed so documents are not always stored locally. And my SSD is like 99% full. Bummer. I need to copy all that to soething local. Ah, this is stressful.

@firefoxx66 Back up?
@fortyseven Thanks, looks like it's been back up for about an hour, according to when people started messaging me about it. I've edited my post to reflect this.

@firefoxx66 Would you mind editing this post to add a followup note, if the data has indeed been restored?

(Everyone should continue archiving what we can, though.)

@rcbo Thanks, this is a great idea - I've done so now!
@firefoxx66 which datasets ? i just checked and i can still see some covid ones
@vekat Thanks, looks like it's been back up for about an hour, according to when people started messaging me about it. I've edited my post to reflect this.

Spreading the word: there was a project at Harvard to grab all this data before it went down. It's still available.

The references to these anti diversity orders in the "temporarily down" notification were suspicious and gave rise to fears of the worst.
Probably they removed some related content :(
@firefoxx66 Seems to be available now. Wondering if was an actual technical issue or something has changed?
@jchyip Definitely not a technical issue - it says so in the screenshot. I wonder what they've removed to become 'in compliance'?

@firefoxx66

Up and running for me, on casual inspection.
I bet they're watching their web statistics to see how the news spreads and to see if anyone notices.

@seachanged Oh now *that's* interesting!! Glad I included a screenshot - was totally down all this morning and early afternoon when I was checking.

@firefoxx66 I used the site yesterday and all was fine. The death counts for were static for a week pending review a team working for Hitler Orange, but then it came back.

@firefoxx66 they probably removed all references in statistical data to genders other than male or female plus anything else that their compliance team thinks that the new administration might consider "woke". It's absolutely f***ing ridiculous that scientific data has to be altered to fit the new administrations distorted worldview and it likely to break the chain of citations of more than one scientific paper that does statistical analysis on data hosted there

@firefoxx66 "Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government" 🤦

Naturally the politicians are better able to determine biological truth than the [checks notes] biologists.

@firefoxx66 Don't worry after they have scrubbed it from data that is incompatible with the alternate reality the Glorious Leader lives in, it will come back.

@firefoxx66

As @petergleick pointed out, this is the equivalent of the nazi #bookburning.

People need to see this for what it is.
