What I think happened in the 1990’s was good people got sloppy, dropped their guard. They got drunk with Fukuyamaism “end of history”, choosing comfort in the apparent victory of #liberalism instead of being vigilant that the evil ideas we are seeing coming to fruition were still alive. What they especially didn’t recognise they were still supported by A LOT of people.

There was some great research in 2010's about this. That conservatism correlates with certain brain structures, with plenty of research data pointing that there’s about 0.2 to 0.3 correlation, which is significant. And that people actually behave differently from childhood. They really see the world differently.

They found that at a certain threshold, people’s natural propensity to detect threats flips over into the domain where the default interpretation of someone doing a good thing is interpreted as “faking good intentions for personal profit”.

That one people should rule while other people should suffer IS a logical endpoint of seeing the world as everything being a potential threat. That’s also why lies don’t matter, because they fundamentally see the world as “everyone’s lying anyway”.

What people didn’t gather although the research was clear, that this is a feature not a bug.
